Microsoft Releases Quick Hotfix for Excel Copy-Paste Bug, But Only for Excel 2016

Microsoft has moved quickly to patch a vulnerability that caused the copy-paste function in Excel to completely freeze. The bug, which emerged after security update KB5002914 on September 8, 2026, caused paste operations to silently fail—without any notification, sound, or error message. Instead of waiting for the next monthly update cycle, the software giant released a hotfix within days, but the fix only targeted Excel 2016.
The decision to prioritize Excel 2016 has raised questions. This is because the older version is increasingly being abandoned by global users, while the much larger Microsoft 365 user base was not significantly affected. According to Microsoft's official announcement, similar issues also impacted Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and Excel Online in Office Online Server. "Paste operations can fail silently. Even if users try to paste content, the source remains selected and the destination does not change," the company wrote in its status update.
To date, Microsoft has confirmed that Office LTSC 2021 and 2024 are fully recovered. However, for Office LTSC 2019 and Office 2016, the company has only provided mitigation steps, not a permanent solution. This means some users may still experience the same issues when pasting data, especially if it involves conditional formatting, which is cited as the root cause.
For users in Indonesia, this disruption could serve as a reminder that reliance on older Office versions—still common in government agencies and medium-sized companies—risks delayed security responses. Although this bug is relatively minor, similar incidents can disrupt daily productivity, especially for finance and administration teams that depend on Excel for quick data processing. On the other hand, Microsoft 365 users, who form the backbone of Indonesia's corporate market, have barely felt the impact, underscoring the support gap between subscription models and perpetual licenses.
"We recommend users still experiencing issues to temporarily utilize the Paste Special option until a comprehensive fix is available," Microsoft stated in its support notes.
The workaround offered is relatively simple: instead of pressing Ctrl+V, users can select the Paste Special option from the Home tab. However, this method is impractical for workflows requiring high speed and repetition. Microsoft has not provided a definite timeline for when a full patch for Excel 2019 and 2016 will be released, leaving uncertainty for organizations still relying on those versions.
Looking ahead, the question is not just when this bug will be resolved, but how far Microsoft will allocate resources to fix legacy products that are becoming commercially less strategic. If this pattern continues, users of older versions in Indonesia and other developing countries may need to consider migrating to Microsoft 365 or open-source alternatives like LibreOffice to ensure long-term operational continuity.
