Rapper Nicki Minaj is once again in the spotlight after openly expressing her support and admiration for US President Donald Trump. In an interview with Fox News, the singer, whose real name is Onika Tanya Maraj, stated that she was pleased to work with the Trump administration, especially after being appointed as a judge on Trump's latest reality show, The Million Dollar Pitch Competition.
Minaj didn't just praise Trump's capacity as a leader. She highlighted a personal side of Trump that she believes is rarely exposed. "He inspires a lot of people, not just me, and he's fun. He's not just smart and not just a president, he's also someone I can call, someone who every time I see him or hear him speak to other people, he's himself," Minaj said, as quoted by Fox News.
Furthermore, the Super Bass singer described Trump as a down-to-earth figure who makes people feel heard. "He's very down-to-earth. It's easy to connect with him, easy to feel like he hears you, he understands you, and I really love him," she added.
Minaj's support for Trump is not new. Previously, she stated that she voted for Trump because she felt concerned about the treatment the president received. In The Katie Miller Podcast, Minaj explained that religious freedom is one of the values she champions, but the main factor was empathy for Trump. "When I saw how he was being treated repeatedly, I couldn't help it," she said.
She also compared her personal experiences to what Trump went through. "I felt the same bullying in his campaign, and all the lies. That's been done to me for years, and I saw it happening to someone else in real-time, and I thought he didn't deserve it. It made me think, I can't do this anymore," Minaj stated.
"Sometimes people can push you so hard, that they push you into your next calling in life." โ Nicki Minaj
The Trinidadian-born artist also hinted that she is considering entering politics. In a clip uploaded to X, she said that during the 2024 presidential campaign, she saw something that made her message an acquaintance, "This is a mistake." She added, "All of this makes me want to get into politics." Although she declined to elaborate, Minaj mentioned an event a few months ago that further pushed her in that direction.
Minaj's move has sparked various reactions. As a musician with a large fan base, her decision to support Trump is seen as a significant political shift among celebrities. Some observers believe that Minaj's involvement could influence public perception, especially among the younger generation, towards the Trump administration. However, others question the consistency of her stance, given that the entertainment industry tends to be liberal.
For Indonesia, the phenomenon of celebrities entering politics is not new. Several local artists have run for legislative seats or supported specific candidates. Minaj's case can serve as a mirror of how public figures use their platforms to voice political views, while also facing the risk of polarization among fans. Amid an increasingly polarized global political landscape, Minaj's support for Trump underscores that the line between entertainment and politics is blurring.
Moving forward, the public will await whether Minaj will indeed run for election or merely continue as a judge on a reality show. What is clear is that her statements have added color to American political dynamics ahead of the upcoming election. Will her move inspire other celebrities to speak out, or will it backfire on her career?
