Actor Kit Harington has openly shared his personal connection to the Harry Potter franchise, which now leads him to the role of Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO's latest television series. The 39-year-old revealed that Stephen Fry's narrated Harry Potter audiobooks played a significant role in maintaining his stability while struggling through recovery from alcohol addiction.

In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Harington explained that his mind often struggled to switch off, especially at night. This condition worsened when he decided to stop drinking. "I started listening to the Harry Potter audiobooks, and now that's what I listen to every night. So, those books have a special place in my heart," he said. This habit, according to Harington, helped calm his mind before sleep.

That emotional connection then converged with a career opportunity. Harington had previously voiced Lockhart in a new audiobook produced by Audible. Harington also mentioned that the character of Lockhart is not too far from his own personality. Joking, he said that Lockhart is a character addicted to himself, "just a little to the left of me." The role of Lockhart was previously announced to be filled by Nicholas Hoult, but he withdrew due to scheduling issues. The official Harry Potter Instagram account then announced the change. "Before we begin our second year at Hogwarts, there's a slight change due to scheduling: Kit Harington will be taking on the role of Gilderoy Lockhart," the statement read. Deadline reported that Hoult withdrew due to scheduling conflicts.

Production for the second season of the series, which will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, is underway and is expected to begin filming later this year, even before its first season premieres this December. The first season will feature Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.
