Actress Megan Lawless, known for her role as Sarah in the horror film 'Obsession', has been confirmed to star in the upcoming romantic comedy titled 'Crushed'. The news also fulfills Lawless's wish, as she had previously expressed her desire to star in a romantic comedy.
In the film directed by Stephanie Donnelly, Lawless will play Joss, a character described as romantic but always unlucky in love. The plot of 'Crushed' follows Joss's journey as she tries to find the perfect partner for herself. Filming is currently underway in Chicago.
Lawless's move from horror to romantic comedy demonstrates her flexibility as an actress. Previously, she had indeed expressed her desire to try various genres. In an interview with Vogue Singapore, she said, "I want to be a romantic lead in some kind of love story, and I also really want to do comedy. I love comedy."
Besides 'Crushed', Lawless is also working on a psychological thriller titled 'Ping'. The film is directed by Richie Gordon and stars WWE wrestler Liv Morgan. 'Ping' tells the story of an aspiring creative director who lands a dream remote job but must choose between her sanity and a boss she cannot mute. Gordon stated that the film explores the promises of modern work that can push people to work harder and longer, often at the expense of themselves. "Ping questions burnout culture: what is enough?" he said.
"I was struck by how deeply it resonated with Megan and the rest of the cast. I'm very lucky to have the best crew to bring it to life," said Gordon.
Lawless's career has spanned various roles from the outset, from the MTV teen drama 'Finding Carter' to appearances in the films 'Table 19', 'The Hate U Give', and the Hulu crime drama 'The Girl From Plainville'. Nevertheless, she emphasized that she does not want to get too caught up in future plans. "As an artist, I just want to do work that makes me proud and represents me authentically, and affects the people around me in a positive way," she added.
For the Indonesian entertainment industry, Lawless's move could serve as a mirror of how local actors and actresses are also beginning to look at more diverse genres. Romantic comedy always has a large market, and the ability to switch from horror to comedy demonstrates a depth of talent that deserves praise. With these dual projects, Lawless has the potential to expand her fan base and show that she is not just a horror face, but also a star capable of bringing laughter.
Going forward, will 'Crushed' succeed in breaking into the international market and cement Lawless as a romantic comedy star? Only time will tell, but this move clearly marks a new chapter in her career.
