Gregg Araki is returning to the director's chair with an ambitious project titled The Decline of F****** Western Civilization. The dark comedy officially entered production on Wednesday, September 16, in Los Angeles, with Ashton Kutcher and Alison Brie as its two leads. The news was first reported by Deadline and confirmed by industry sources familiar with the project.
Kutcher, 48, and Brie, 43, will take on central roles in the film, which is described as an ensemble piece with a tone said to fall somewhere between Election and American Beauty. Both are familiar names in Hollywood, but their pairing in a dark comedy from a veteran independent director like Araki marks an intriguing new direction for both.
Actor Jesse Williams, 45, is reportedly in talks to take the third lead. So far, plot details for The Decline of F****** Western Civilization remain under wraps. The script was written by Kevin W. Koehler, then revised by Araki himself. Why Not Productions and Goodfellas are believed to be the production companies behind the project.
The project follows Araki's success with I Want Your Sex, an erotic comedy-thriller starring Cooper Hoffman and Olivia Wilde. In that film, Araki revealed that he deliberately swapped gender roles after the #MeToo movement. Originally, the story centered on a female intern and a male boss, with a comedic approach in the style of Fifty Shades of Grey. But after #MeToo, he changed it to a male intern and a female boss, which gave rise to the character Erika Tracy.
"I worked on I Want Your Sex for ten or eleven years. As an independent filmmaker, you work on many things at once. And it worked out, because a lot changed over those years. Originally, it was a female intern and a male boss, and it was pitched as a comedy in the style of Fifty Shades of Grey. But after Me Too, I changed the roles to a male intern and a female boss, which produced Erika Tracy. It's far more interesting to have a female dominant and a male subordinate," Araki told Empire.
Araki also highlighted Olivia Wilde's work, saying Hollywood has often failed to use her well. He compared Wilde to 1940s stars like Rita Hayworth or Ingrid Bergman, praising her distinctive bone structure and magnetic presence. "I think Hollywood doesn't really know what to do with her. She got bored playing the sexy wife or girlfriend, which I think is why she started directing," Araki said. He first noticed Wilde when she starred in The O.C. as a cool bisexual girl.
For the Indonesian film industry, this project can serve as a mirror of how independent directors in Hollywood continue to evolve in response to social change, including gender issues. Araki, known for works such as Nowhere and Kaboom, shows that dark comedy still has room in the global market, especially with big names like Kutcher and Brie. In Indonesia, films of a similar genre often struggle to break through to a broad market, but Araki's success on the international stage can be a reference for local filmmakers who want to tackle similar themes with a bolder approach.
With production just beginning, The Decline of F****** Western Civilization is expected to be one of the most anticipated independent films. Is the ensemble formula in the vein of Election and American Beauty still relevant in a cinematic landscape dominated by superhero franchises? The answer will become clear when the film is released, but Araki's move to recruit Kutcher and Brie shows that he is serious about combining mainstream stars with his distinctive artistic vision.
