Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa was officially dismissed from his post on Monday (14/9/2026) after receiving a phone call from the Palace while attending a meeting of Committee IV of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) in Jakarta. The dramatic moment unfolded as Purbaya was in dialogue with senators, after which he left the meeting room without explanation and did not return.
The call was initially ignored because Purbaya was answering a question from a council member. The chair of DPD Committee IV, Ahmad Nawardi, who was leading the meeting, reminded him to take the call from the Palace immediately. Purbaya then left the room, gathered his belongings, and departed. The senators have no authority to dismiss a minister, but they became silent witnesses to the end of Purbaya's tenure, which had lasted only a year.
This replacement adds to the long list of ministerial rotations in the Merah Putih Cabinet. In less than two years, eight ministerial posts have changed occupants. This frequency raises questions about the stability of the government's policy direction, especially in the fiscal sector, which has been the main pillar supporting priority programs.
Purbaya was known as a vocal figure pushing for fiscal reform, including efforts to broaden the tax base and maintain budget discipline. However, he was also at the center of political interest tug-of-war, particularly regarding the management of state investment funds through Danantara. Sources in palace circles say that internal tensions between the Finance Ministry and Danantara were one of the main triggers for the dismissal.
"There is a call from the Palace, please take it immediately," said Ahmad Nawardi, Chair of DPD Committee IV, while leading the meeting.
For Indonesia's financial markets, this sudden replacement could cause short-term turbulence. Foreign and domestic investors will scrutinize who replaces Purbaya and whether the direction of fiscal consolidation continues. Policy uncertainty is usually reflected in the movement of government bond (SBN) yields and the rupiah exchange rate in the coming days.
On the other hand, President Prabowo Subianto appears to want to accelerate the consolidation of political power ahead of his second year in office. Cabinet reshuffles are often an instrument to ensure loyalty and program effectiveness. However, if not managed with good public communication, this step could be perceived as political intervention in institutions that should be independent, such as the Ministry of Finance.
Economic observers assess that the sustainability of structural reforms, including strengthening state revenue and spending efficiency, will depend heavily on the credibility of the new minister. They also warn that internal political turbulence can disrupt business confidence, especially amid a global economic slowdown and uncertainty in commodity prices.
Going forward, the public awaits the official announcement of the new cabinet lineup. The big question: will this replacement strengthen fiscal-monetary coordination, or instead mark a new chapter of more intense political interest tug-of-war within the power circle? Only time will tell, but the market will not wait too long.
