Indonesia-passport striker Lassana Doucoure has recorded an unusual moment in his career: he officially joined FK Haugesund on 26 October 2026, but before he could play a single minute, his new club had already secured promotion to the Eliteserien, the top tier of the Norwegian league. The confirmation came after The Seagulls beat Asane 3-1 in week 29 of the Norwegian First Division on Sunday (1/11/2026).
The win kept FK Haugesund firmly at the top of the table with 65 points from 29 matches, two points ahead of nearest challenger Stromsgodset Toppfotball in second place. With one match remaining, the team coached by Eirik Horneland can no longer be displaced from the top two, the direct promotion zone to the Eliteserien. This season, Haugesund have been dominant with 19 wins, six draws, and four defeats.
Doucoure had actually joined Haugesund back in August 2026, but his official unveiling was delayed by the work permit process. The player born in Jakarta on 30 July 2003 has Malian blood from both parents, but Transfermarkt records Indonesian passport as his nationality. He trained at the Dewa United U-20 and Barito Putera U-20 academies before being promoted to Laskar Antasari's first team in 2024. In the 2024/2025 BRI Liga 1, his name made the matchday squad list but he never received any playing minutes. In the 2025/2026 Pegadaian Championship, he made eight appearances with one goal and one assist.
"We signed Doucoure for the long term. This promotion is the result of the whole team's work, and we believe he can develop at a higher level," said a club internal source who declined to be named.
For Indonesian football, Doucoure's move to a club that will play in the Eliteserien is a positive signal. Although he has yet to debut, he will train and compete in a more competitive environment. If he can break into the first team, Doucoure has a chance to follow in the footsteps of other diaspora players who have strengthened the Indonesia national team. National team coach Patrick Kluivert is known to be monitoring a number of heritage players in Europe to bolster the front line.
However, real challenges await. The Eliteserien is known as a physical and tactical league, with clubs such as Molde, Rosenborg, and Bodรธ/Glimt regularly appearing in European competitions. Doucoure must compete with established forwards at Haugesund who have been prolific this season. His contract until 2027 gives him time, but public expectations in Indonesia are certainly high.
Going forward, Doucoure's debut with Haugesund in the Eliteserien will be the real test. Can he prove that his club's promotion is not merely a coincidence, but the start of a shining international career? The answer will be seen on the pitch, not on paper.
