Persib Bandung secured their place in the 2026/2027 AFC Champions League Two round of 16 after defeating Melbourne Victory 2-1 at AAMI Park Stadium on Wednesday (4/11/2026). The win was proof of the maturity of Bojan Hodak's side in handling the pressure of an away match.
Playing in front of the opposition's supporters, Persib fell behind first through a Julio Cesar own goal in the 72nd minute. However, the fighting spirit of Maung Bandung deserves praise. Two late goalsโfrom Luka Menalo (85') and Balsa Sekulic (90')โturned the match around and secured all three points.
With the additional three points, Persib now have 12 points from four matches, eight points clear of second-placed Melbourne Victory on 4 points. The remaining two matches no longer matter for the Bandung side in locking up a ticket to the knockout phase.
In the first half, Persib actually played aggressively. Uilliam Barros had three golden chances, while Balsa Sekulic threatened twice and Eliano Reijnders once. However, less composed finishing kept the score goalless until half-time.
In the second half, Melbourne Victory tried to press. Balsa Sekulic's long-range strike in the 52nd minute was still saved by goalkeeper Jack Duncan. The deadlock broke in the 72nd minute when a scramble in front of the Persib goal ended in a Julio Cesar own goal. It began with a free kick that was not properly dealt with, the loose ball was struck by Brendan Hamill, hit the post, and struck Julio Cesar before going into the net.
However, Persib did not stand still. Tactical changes and the introduction of fresh players made their counter-attacks sharper. In the 85th minute, a combination between Ragnar Oratmangoen and Mariano Peralta was finished by Luka Menalo with a close-range shot. Five minutes later, Peralta's low cross was converted by Balsa Sekulic into the winning goal.
"We showed the character of a strong team. Going a goal down is not the end of everything. The players believe in each other and kept fighting to the end," said Persib coach Bojan Hodak in a post-match press conference.
This win is not only about the numbers, but also sends a signal that Persib are serious about competing in Asian competition. With a squad mixing local and foreign players, Maung Bandung proved they can adapt to the opponent's fast style of play. The defensive trio of Danijel Loncar, Patricio Matricardi, and Julio Cesar, despite a momentary lapse, were generally solid in guarding Fitrah Maulana.
For Indonesian football, Persib's achievement is an oasis amid the national team's struggles on the international stage. The club's success in reaching the AFC Champions League Two round of 16 shows that Indonesian clubs have the potential to compete at the Asian level if managed well. It is also motivation for other Liga 1 contestants to raise the standard of the competition.
Going forward, Persib are certain to face tough opponents in the knockout phase. However, with this dramatic win as capital, the players' mentality is believed to be increasingly sharpened. The question is, can Persib go further and write a new chapter of history for Indonesian football on the Asian stage?
