Malek El Mala stole the spotlight on his Bundesliga debut by scoring the equalizer in the 79th minute, forcing Union Berlin to a 1-1 draw against Cologne at Stadion an der Alten Försterei on Saturday (19/10/2024). The goal not only salvaged a point for the visitors but also created a special moment for the El Mala family, as his older brother, Saïd El Mala, contributed to the build-up.
Union Berlin actually started the match more aggressively. They took the lead in the 10th minute through Janik Haberer, who latched onto a pass from Tim Skarke. The goal began with Derrick Köhn's run down the left, which was played on to Skarke before Haberer finished from close range. Cologne looked to struggle matching the hosts' tempo early on, though Union did not always threaten Marvin Schwäbe's goal.
In the second half, Cologne began to take the initiative. Even so, they still struggled to create clear chances. The best opportunity fell to Saïd El Mala in the 73rd minute, but his shot sailed over the crossbar. Then, in the 79th minute, Malek El Mala, who had come on as a substitute four minutes earlier, equalized. From Saïd's cross, the ball was headed by Alessio Castro-Montes and pounced on by Malek at the far post. The goal immediately changed the dynamics of the match and gave Cologne the confidence to chase a winner.
Unfortunately, no further goals came before the final whistle. The score stayed 1-1, and both teams had to settle for a share of the points. The 5-0 win over Union Berlin in the DFB Cup in midweek was not repeated in the league. Cologne coach René Wagner made two changes from that match, while Union, under their new coach, made five rotations in search of their best formula.
Cologne's 5-0 rout in the DFB Cup was a notable footnote. In the league, however, Union Berlin put up fierce resistance. Union coach Bo Svensson, who made five changes, seemingly wanted a response after that humiliating defeat. Though they failed to win, at least Union managed to halt Cologne's positive momentum.
"I'm very happy to score on my debut, especially with my brother's help. This is a dream come true," Malek El Mala said after the match.
For Cologne, the result may feel like two points dropped given their dominance of possession in the second half. Still, the team's fighting spirit in coming from behind deserves credit. Union Berlin, meanwhile, had to settle for a point at home despite having led first.
Both teams return to action next week. Cologne will host a tough opponent, while Union Berlin will look to get back to winning ways. The question is: will Malek El Mala's impressive performance continue and earn him a place in the starting line-up? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the Bundesliga's young talent pool is now increasingly graced by the El Mala brothers.
