Anna Sabine, the Liberal Democrat MP for Frome and East Somerset, has revealed that her voice is beginning to recover after she suffered vocal cord nerve damage from thyroid surgery last June. The incident left her unable to speak normally for several months.
During the operation, one of the nerves controlling the vocal cords was cut, causing a condition known as vocal cord paralysis. Sabine, 46, said she first realized something was wrong when she woke up from surgery at a hospital in Bath. โI had been warned it might feel strange, so I tried to convince myself that this was a normal effect,โ she said. But the next day, the surgeon came and apologized for having caused permanent damage. โAt that point I could still speak, but only in a whisper,โ she added.
When parliament returned in September, Sabine had to use a microphone to take part in debates. She said she was shocked and felt very lonely. โVoice is an important part of a person's identity, whether or not you are an MP,โ she said. She even wanted to hide herself and was reluctant to speak in the chamber because she was unsure what voice would come out. But thanks to support from many people who emailed her after she appeared on radio and television, Sabine found the courage to keep speaking in parliament. โI felt inspired by them. Even though I was very embarrassed, I did it anyway,โ she said.
Now Sabine's voice has returned to near its pre-surgery condition. โDuring recess, one morning I woke up and my voice was like this. My family said my voice was stronger,โ she recounted. Although her friends say her voice is not exactly the same as before, Sabine feels there is still some tremor. โBroadly speaking, my voice is back to where it should be,โ she said.
โVoice is an important part of a person's identity. I felt very exposed and vulnerable having to speak with an unstable voice.โ

Sabine's case highlights the risks that accompany thyroid surgery, especially when the vocal cord nerves are involved. Although rare, such complications can significantly affect a patient's quality of life, including the ability to work and interact socially. In the UK, incidents of medical malpractice like this are usually handled through legal and compensation channels, but the most important thing is how the health system provides adequate recovery support.
Sabine said she will campaign on the importance of better access to therapy for adults who experience nerve injury or similar conditions. She hopes her personal experience can encourage greater attention to post-surgery rehabilitation needs. โI can't hide anymore. I feel driven to stand up and speak,โ she said.
Going forward, attention will focus on how parliament and the UK health system handle similar cases, and whether there will be policy changes on medical transparency and therapy support. For Sabine herself, the recovery of her voice marks a new beginning for returning to her duties as a people's representative with full confidence.
