Crystal Palace at a Crossroads: Keep Sage or Switch to Frank?

Pierre Sage's position as Crystal Palace coach is beginning to wobble after a run of poor results left the south London club languishing in 17th place in the Premier League. The win over Fulham in the Carabao Cup did provide temporary relief, but consecutive league defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United have put Sage under intense scrutiny.
Palace currently have the worst defensive record in the Premier League this season, a stark contrast to last season when they conceded only 51 goals—the eighth-best in the league. The departure of key defender Maxence Lacroix and the sale of Marc Guehi to Manchester City have weakened the back line, while injuries to Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr have blunted the attack.
Club chairman Steve Parish is known for his patience, but expectations not to slip into the relegation zone are very high. With Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool as the next opponents, the pressure on Sage will only grow heavier. Palace's management is reported to have begun exploring replacement options, and Sean Dyche has emerged as a leading candidate.
Dyche, the former Burnley and Everton manager, does have a track record of saving teams from relegation. However, his pragmatic and rather defensive style of play is seen as at odds with Palace's ambition to compete in Europe again. Since Oliver Glasner's departure at the end of the 2025/26 season, Palace have sought to preserve the attacking identity that brought them the Conference League title.
"The managerial market is very crowded at the moment. Palace could get a better option than Dyche," goes the view gaining ground among observers.
A more appealing alternative is Thomas Frank. The Danish manager is currently out of work after being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur in early 2026. Despite his failure at Spurs, his reputation was built on remarkable work over seven years at Brentford, where he built a competitive team through a smart recruitment model. Pep Guardiola once even called him one of the best managers.
Frank is known for his tactical flexibility, often using a 4-2-3-1 formation that prioritizes tidy organization, aggressive pressing, and midfield compactness. This style is said to resemble Glasner's approach, which successfully led Palace to a European trophy. If Palace want to continue their long-term project with an attacking identity, Frank could be the more aligned choice.
The decision rests with Parish and the board. Will they stick with Sage and hope for improvement in the coming weeks, switch to a more experienced option like Dyche, or take a progressive step by appointing Frank? In the coming weeks, the club's direction will become clear.
