The world's largest crypto exchange, Binance, is facing a security onslaught after a US$6.3 billion breach was revealed on Thursday night. The incident immediately drew a sharp reaction from Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, who asked Elon Musk to stop mocking the company on social media and instead offer support.
Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, had earlier posted a series of emojis on platform X—ranging from laughter to a frowning face—that appeared to mock the incident. Zhao spoke out on Friday, stressing that now was not the time for jokes. He reminded Musk that Binance holds a stake in SpaceX worth more than US$1 billion, the result of a US$500 million investment in the takeover of Twitter some time ago.
“Elon, I respect you greatly, but this is not the time for taunts. Please stop,” Zhao wrote. “Our SPCX shares (from the US$500 million investment in your Twitter takeover) are worth more than a billion. I would greatly appreciate it if you showed a little support. Thank you!”
Tension between the two is nothing new. In November 2021, Binance suspended Dogecoin withdrawals due to a digital wallet disruption, which Musk called “suspicious”. Zhao responded by highlighting the recall of nearly 12,000 Tesla vehicles in the United States over software and hardware issues.
After the incident, Binance immediately halted all withdrawals and deposits. As of Friday, deposits had returned to normal, but withdrawals had not been fully reopened. Investigators suspect the attack was carried out by TraderTraitor, a hacker group linked to North Korea. As of this news being published, about US$3 billion in crypto assets had been frozen to prevent funds from fleeing.
In the context of the industry, the breach is a severe blow to trust in global crypto exchanges. Binance, which has long served as a barometer of liquidity in the digital asset market, now faces major questions about the resilience of its security systems. Analysts assess that the incident could slow the flow of institutional investment into crypto, at least in the short term, because large investors tend to demand higher security standards.
For Indonesia, the shock at Binance could affect sentiment in the domestic crypto market. Although Binance does not operate directly in Indonesia, many local investors access global exchanges through intermediary platforms. Domestic regulators, such as Bappebti, need to scrutinize this knock-on effect, especially regarding risk literacy and consumer protection. The event is also a reminder that rapidly growing crypto adoption must be matched by stronger security infrastructure and oversight.
Going forward, attention will focus on Binance's steps to restore public trust and complete the investigation. Will this giant exchange be able to recover and tighten its security protocols, or will it become a turning point that shakes their dominance in the global market? Meanwhile, Musk's stance—choosing to maneuver on social media instead of responding seriously—adds another layer of drama amid a real cyber security crisis.
