SUGBK Renovated October 2026–April 2027, Concert Stage Loads the Main Trigger

- PPKGBK memulai penguatan struktur Field of Play SUGBK untuk mengantisipasi beban panggung konser center stage yang melampaui kapasitas 150–200 kg/m².
- Renovasi bertahap: pekerjaan struktural rampung November 2026, uji coba Februari 2027, dan stadion siap digunakan akhir April 2027.
- Penguatan ini diklaim sebagai investasi jangka panjang agar SUGBK tetap menjadi rumah Timnas Indonesia sekaligus venue konser internasional tanpa mengorbankan kualitas lapangan.

The Gelora Bung Karno Complex Management Center (PPKGBK) officially began construction to strengthen the Field of Play (FOP) structure of the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Jakarta, in October 2026. The move was triggered by the growing frequency of international music concerts with stages in the middle of the pitch, which load the field surface and could damage the drainage system and grass quality.
The SUGBK pitch currently has a bearing capacity of only around 150–200 kilograms per square meter. The production loads of global-scale concerts—including stage structures, rigging, and heavy equipment—risk exceeding that threshold. If left unchecked, the lower layers of the pitch could be damaged, drainage elevation disrupted, and water pooling could appear during rain. The flatness of the surface and the grass quality for football matches are also at risk.
PPKGBK President Director Rakhmadi A. Kusumo stressed that the strengthening is a long-term investment. "This structural strengthening is an investment to ensure that SUGBK is not only a national pride, but is also able to accommodate the evolving needs of global public use, while strengthening quality and safety," he said in an official statement on Friday (30/10/2026).
SUGBK has long been a multifunctional venue. In addition to being the home of the Indonesia national team and international matches, the stadium is often used for religious events and concerts by world musicians such as Coldplay, BLACKPINK, and Kanye West (YE). In 2027, BTS and Westlife are scheduled to perform there. This dual role demands consistent safety and quality standards, especially since sports and entertainment schedules often run close together.
PPKGBK has prepared two main methods: equipment modernization and strengthening the pitch foundation. PPKGBK Director of Development and Business Development Mokhamad Rofik Anwar explained that pitch maintenance efforts have been carried out for a long time. In 2022, the grass layer was revitalized to welcome the 2023 U-20 World Cup, covering laboratory checks, sterilization of planting media, surface leveling, grass planting, and intensive care. Now the focus has shifted to structural strengthening so the pitch is more resilient to large-scale events.
Head of the GBK Development and Maintenance Division David Prastyan said the program is proceeding in stages. Structural work is targeted for completion in November 2026, followed by trials of modern equipment in February 2027. SUGBK is therefore targeted to be back in prime condition and ready for various sporting activities by the end of April 2027.
"SUGBK will remain the main home for the Indonesia national team and the venue for state agendas before being used for other purposes," Rakhmadi stressed.
The renovation raises questions about the Indonesia national team's schedule and domestic competitions during the October 2026–April 2027 period. PPKGBK has not detailed alternative venues, but has ensured that its main function as a football stadium is not set aside. The structural strengthening is instead intended to allow SUGBK to accommodate evolving public needs without sacrificing match standards.
Going forward, the project's success will be tested by the packed 2027 agenda: BTS and Westlife concerts, World Cup qualifiers, and possibly other international matches. If completed on time, SUGBK could become an example of sustainable multifunctional venue management. However, if delays occur, the impact will not only be on pitch quality but also on Indonesia's credibility as a host of global events.
