McDonald's has finally confirmed the widely circulating speculation: the Pokémon Happy Meal is coming back, and this time it includes not only collectible cards but also a physical toy that has been absent for nearly a decade. The promo is scheduled to go on sale in several countries in November 2026, with a rolling launch schedule through early 2027.
The confirmation came after leaks spread on social media starting in late October. Netizens had been widely discussing the possibility of the collaboration, but McDonald's only made an official announcement via its X account (formerly Twitter) on 29 October 2026. In its post, the fast-food chain stated that each Happy Meal box will contain two random cards from a total of 15 collectible cards, plus one mini toy shaped like a Happy Meal box featuring iconic Pokémon characters.
Unlike previous editions that included only cards, this time McDonald's is offering mini plastic toys in the form of Happy Meal box replicas featuring Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur. This is the first time since 2017—or about nine years ago—that a Pokémon Happy Meal includes a physical toy. The move appears to respond to market demand that has so far been dominated by card hunters, while also reviving the element of surprise that had been lost.
The cards on offer are reprints of popular characters such as Jirachi, Snorlax, Eevee, and Pikachu, with illustrations by artists well known in the collector community, including Kodama, Miki Kudo, and DOM. As with previous editions, the cards are likely to use a holofoil layer, though McDonald's has not elaborated further. For collectors, the presence of artwork by renowned artists is an attraction in itself that can raise resale value on the secondary market.
The global launch schedule has also been revealed. The United States, Australia, Canada, Fiji, France, New Zealand, and Spain will be the first countries to sell the Pokémon Happy Meal starting in November 2026. Most other countries follow in December, while the UK and Ireland must wait until February 2027. This time difference could trigger a wave of cross-border purchases, especially among collectors who do not want to miss out.
"McDonald's has learned from previous experience. Toys can now be purchased separately from the Happy Meal to reduce the risk of food waste and chaos," said an official McDonald's statement quoted from their announcement.
History shows that McDonald's collaborations with Pokémon have often run into problems. In 2021, several restaurants in Japan had to call the police because of crowds of buyers scrambling for cards. Many people ordered Happy Meals in large quantities just to get the cards, then threw away the food. The incident was a valuable lesson for McDonald's, which then took anticipatory steps by offering the option to buy toys separately.
In Indonesia, although there has been no official announcement regarding the launch schedule, enthusiasm among local Pokémon collectors is quite high. Pokémon card fan communities in Indonesia often hold fairs and auctions of limited-edition cards. If this promo comes to Indonesia, a significant surge in demand is expected, especially for McDonald's special-edition cards that are not sold in retail stores. However, without official confirmation, the public will still have to wait patiently for further information.
Going forward, this collaboration is not only a promotional event for McDonald's but also a reflection of how pop culture and the collector economy are intertwined. The question is, will McDonald's Indonesia join this wave, and are they ready to anticipate the euphoria that may arise? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: collectors can hardly wait for the next surprise.
