Netflix is once again expanding its portfolio of video game adaptations. This time, the streaming platform has teamed up with Krafton to develop a live-action series based on PUBG, the battle royale game known worldwide. The announcement was made on Thursday (local time), marking an ambitious step by Netflix to bring a popular game franchise to the screen.
Surprisingly, Donald Glover—the actor and creator behind the series Atlanta—will take a central role: as director, writer, executive producer, and star. His brother, Stephen Glover, is also joining as writer and executive producer. The collaboration raises high expectations, given the Glover brothers' track record of producing critically acclaimed work.
PUBG itself is no ordinary game. Since its launch in 2017 as PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, it has been a pioneer of the battle royale genre that later spawned many imitators, including Fortnite. Krafton, the South Korean developer, continues to expand the franchise through spin-offs such as PUBG: Black Budget and PUBG: DED.NET, though development of the former was ultimately canceled. PUBG's success rests on a loyal player base: an average of more than 300,000 concurrent players on Steam each month, with a peak of 1.29 million players this year, far below the all-time record of 3.2 million during its heyday.
Netflix's move to adapt PUBG is not without reason. Beyond its large fan base, the game has rich narrative material to explore in series format. However, challenges arise because video game adaptations often fail to meet fans' expectations. Netflix itself has a mixed record in this regard, with several successful titles such as Arcane and Castlevania, but also some that fell short. Glover's presence as showrunner is expected to bring a fresh perspective and strong cinematic quality.
"We are very excited to work with Donald and Stephen Glover, as well as the Krafton team, to bring the world of PUBG to a format unlike anything seen before," a Netflix representative said in an official statement.
The project also adds to Netflix's long list of game adaptations, including the live-action series Assassin's Creed, the film Gears of War, animated series based on Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering, and Clash of Clans, as well as a competition show inspired by Overcooked. Netflix is also developing additional seasons for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, and Devil May Cry, plus projects with Sega including a Crazy Taxi film. However, no release date for the PUBG series has been announced.
For Indonesia's entertainment industry, adapting games into live-action series could inspire efforts to explore local IP potential. Even so, production challenges and large budgets remain major obstacles. On the other hand, gamers in Indonesia—whose numbers are significant—are certainly waiting to see how PUBG is brought to life in series format. Will Netflix and Glover meet expectations, or fall into the video game adaptation curse? Time will tell, but one thing is certain: the project has already drawn the world's attention.
