The US oil market is holding its breath. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices are concentrated in a narrowing triangle formation with a neckline around $102 per barrel, and according to several technical observers, the pressure locking prices in place will not last long. The direction in which prices break out of the pattern could set the tone for global risk assets, including Bitcoin, in the coming weeks.
Since March and April, WTI's trading range has kept shrinking. Lower highs and shallower troughs have formed what traders call a coil or pennant—like a spring being compressed ever tighter. Naomi Blohm, senior market adviser at Total Farm Marketing, said via X that the release of pressure from such a pattern is usually followed by a significant price surge. But as analysts caution, a triangle pattern gives no directional hint: it could break up or down.
If WTI breaks above the upper boundary around $105.50, attention will shift to the March–April highs in the $117–$119 range. That scenario is not good news for Bitcoin. A sustained oil surge could stoke inflation, push government bond yields higher, and keep interest rates elevated for longer. Tighter credit conditions typically weigh on demand for risk assets such as technology stocks and cryptocurrency. Oil prices themselves have already jumped 80% this year, and inflation worries are starting to build again.
Though often dubbed digital gold, Bitcoin in practice moves more like a stock. CoinDesk's analysis of TradingView data shows Bitcoin's 30-day correlation with the Nasdaq 100 index at 0.64—a reading of 1 would mean the two move in perfect lockstep. Since the Iran war began, Bitcoin has also moved in the opposite direction from oil. That means if stocks are pressured by rising oil and yields, Bitcoin will most likely weaken too.
The oil market is at a turning point with a big move likely imminent, and that will have a direct impact on inflation and risk assets.
The opposite scenario is also open. If WTI breaks below the $93 level, inflation pressure eases and that is a tailwind for both stocks and Bitcoin. Unfortunately, no one can be sure of the breakout direction. What is clear, according to analysts, is that the direction will set the tone for risk assets in the coming weeks. Iran, an oil exporter at war with the United States since March, is reportedly drafting a budget assuming $130 per barrel for next year—a signal that producers, too, are preparing for extreme scenarios.
For Indonesia, this dynamic is more than just an event on a terminal screen. As a net oil importer, higher WTI prices will weigh on the trade balance, widen the budget deficit through energy subsidies, and ultimately erode purchasing power. Import-cost inflation could force Bank Indonesia to keep interest rates high for longer, which affects issuers' cost of capital and investor appetite for domestic risk assets, including crypto. Conversely, a global oil slump would be a tailwind for the rupiah and for room to ease monetary policy.
What remains now is the question of direction. Will WTI explode upward and drag risk markets into a correction, or will it instead collapse downward and open room for a recovery? Traders appear to have positioned for both possibilities, but for long-term investors, discipline around the key levels—$105.50 and $93—will be the compass that determines the next move.
