Sunderland in Trouble: Centre-Back Pair and Attack Axis Blamed for Defeat

Sunderland's 0-2 defeat to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday (5/10/2026) was no ordinary bad result. The loss leaves The Black Cats in the Premier League relegation zone after seven matches, with only one win, over Fulham in August. Last season, they finished seventh and qualified for European competition. Now, coach Regis Le Bris faces a harsh reality: several key players performed far below standard, and the starting XI combination he chose proved a complete failure.
The two most scrutinised areas are centre-back and the attack axis. The centre-back pairing of Danso and Alderete endured a dreadful night. A communication error early in the match opened the way for Evanilson to deliver a cross that Marcus Tavernier finished. Before that had settled, Danso again failed to deal with an aerial ball and fouled the Bournemouth forward, earning a red card in the 17th minute. Alderete was no better; his poor back-pass became the assist for Bournemouth's second goal after the break. Statistics show the pair won no ground duels at all, only one aerial duel, and Alderete's pass success rate was just 55% over nearly an hour of play.
The problems did not stop at the back. Le Bris kept the combination of Chris Rigg as attacking midfielder and Timur Tuterov as the lone striker, even though both had failed to shine in the Europa League against Torreense last Thursday. That decision proved wrong. Tuterov, playing as a lone number nine, did not register a single shot on target, created no chances, and recorded only three successful passes from seven attempts before being withdrawn in the 59th minute. Meanwhile Rigg, acting as the link between midfield and attack, also created no chances during 65 minutes. Both received poor ratings, at least 3/10, and left Sunderland's attack blunt, unable to respond after falling behind.
โThese two pairings must not be fielded together again in upcoming matches unless it is absolutely unavoidable,โ read the sharp assessment of their performance.
For Le Bris, the situation is complicated. Brian Brobbey is beginning to recover from injury, but Tuterov, the young Ukrainian, has yet to show the quality of a lone spearhead. Rigg, an academy product, has also been unable to bridge midfield and attack. This defeat is not only about individual quality but also about tactics and player selection. Le Bris needs to carry out a thorough evaluation immediately before facing Lech Poznan in the Europa League. If not, his position as coach could come under growing threat, and Sunderland risk sinking deeper into the relegation zone.
The question is whether Le Bris dares to make major changes. Or will he stick with the same formation and hope fortune changes? The Sunderland public clearly demands instant improvement. The match against Lech Poznan could be a crucial moment to prove that this team still has the courage to bounce back.
