A 42-year-old man identified by the initials DF was arrested by officers of the Satreskrim of Polres Metro Bekasi Kota together with the Reskrim Unit of Polsek Bekasi Selatan, following an alleged sexual harassment of a female student in the Kayuringin Jaya area, Bekasi Selatan. The arrest sheds light on an incident recorded by surveillance cameras that had caused an uproar online.
The incident began on Wednesday (14/10) when the victim was walking. The perpetrator, riding a motorcycle, approached and allegedly touched the victim's chest before fleeing. CCTV footage from around the location then spread widely on social media, sparking public anger and pressure for the police to act quickly.
According to the Kasat Reskrim of Polres Metro Bekasi Kota, Kompol Verdika Bagus Prasetya, the investigation began shortly after the report was received. "We prioritize thoroughness in establishing evidence so that the entire sequence of events can be uncovered objectively and accounted for legally," he said in an official statement on Friday (16/10). DF has now been handed over to Satres PPA and PPO for further examination.
The Kapolres Metro Bekasi Kota, Kombes Putu Kholis Aryana, stressed that handling sexual violence must not stop at prosecuting the perpetrator. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the victim feels safe and does not experience pressure during the legal process. "Incidents like this must not be taken lightly because they can cause psychological effects for the victim," said Putu.
The presence of the Police is not only to uncover and process alleged criminal acts, but also to ensure the victim obtains a sense of safety and does not experience pressure during the legal process.
The statement highlights a dimension often overlooked in sexual harassment cases: the psychological recovery of survivors. In many cases, victims face stigma and shame that make them reluctant to report. Therefore, Putu's call for the public to come forward and jointly safeguard the confidentiality of the victim's identity is crucial.
This case also shows how CCTV footage and social media virality can accelerate an arrest, but at the same time risk compromising the victim's privacy. The police are required to balance transparency with the protection of victims' rights, especially since the victim is still a student.
Going forward, the public will watch whether the legal process against DF proceeds transparently and in favor of the victim. Beyond that, a larger question arises: how safe are public spaces in cities like Bekasi for women and children? Without systematic prevention, the arrest of one perpetrator may only address the symptom, not the root of the problem.
