Google officially announced the expansion of its Health Guardian service to the Fitbit Air and Fitbit Edge devices for Google Health Premium subscribers. The feature, previously exclusive to the Pixel Watch, will be available soon, marking a strategic move by the company to strengthen its position in the health wearable market.
Health Guardian offers monthly summaries of blood pressure and insulin resistance trends through the Health app. In addition, the in-app Health Coach will provide lifestyle and health recommendations based on that data, along with insights that can help users discuss with their doctors. Google likens the feature to a "check engine light for overall health," giving an early indication if something needs attention.
There is also a significant improvement in automatic activity tracking. Google says the update will address weaknesses in detecting fast activities such as tennis, HIIT, and other workout types that were previously hard to recognize. Fitbit and Pixel devices will now factor in movement, routines, manual corrections, and location to provide a more comprehensive picture of activity. "This update makes automatic activity tracking much smarter, more reliable, and more accurate," Google claims.
"The Health Guardian feature gives an early indication that something needs attention, like a check engine light for overall well-being," Google said in its announcement.
Google also introduced the Health app, which replaced the Fitbit app a few months ago. The app serves as a portal for users' health, fitness, and sleep data, connects with other apps such as Peloton and MyFitnessPal, and can sync medical records. A partnership with medtech company Abbott to connect the Lingo continuous glucose monitor to the app was also announced, and will soon be available to users in the United States.
On the hardware side, Google launched a more stylish woven stainless steel Metal Mesh band for the Fitbit Air. It is available in Champagne Gold or Polished Silver for $70, or in a bundle with the Fitbit Air Obsidian for $150 at Target and the Google Store. Pre-orders open next week, and the band will be available on October 27.
Google's move strengthens its digital health ecosystem, competing with Apple and Samsung, which are also aggressively developing health features on wearables. For Indonesia, the arrival of these advanced features could encourage adoption of wearable devices for personal health monitoring, especially among health-conscious urban users. However, the availability of the Premium service and language support remain challenges of their own.
Looking ahead, the question is how quickly Google brings this innovation to global markets, including Indonesia, and how local regulators respond to increasingly deep health data integration. With the growing healthy lifestyle trend, wearables are no longer just accessories, but potential health partners.
