The series adaptation of the narrative adventure game Life Is Strange has officially completed filming. The news was shared by cinematographer Vincent De Paula in an Instagram post featuring a collage of Polaroid-style photos with the words "WRAPPED!!" and the caption "Can't wait to show you what we did." The announcement coincided with the timeframe that serves as the setting of the original game, October 7โ11, a coincidence fans were quick to note.
The project, produced by Amazon MGM Studios with Square Enix, was first announced more than a year ago. Since then, a series of casting announcements and production updates have marked its journey, though a release date has yet to be confirmed. Now, with filming complete, attention turns to post-production, which typically takes months before release.
Behind the scenes, Charlie Covell is entrusted with the roles of showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Covell is known for their work on the critically acclaimed series The End of the F***ing World. Meanwhile, the director's chair for the first two episodes is filled by Karyn Kusama, who previously directed the film Jennifer's Body and several episodes of the series Yellowjackets. The leads, Maisy Stella (My Old Ass) and Tatum Grace Hopkins, will play Chloe and Max. A supporting cast rounds out the production, including Tom Cullen, Leisha Hailey, Raรบl Castillo, Owen Teague, Billy Barratt, Emily Carey, Esther McGregor, Faly Rakotohavana, and Mia Isaac.
The adaptation draws on the story of the first Life Is Strange game, released in 2015. The game follows Max Caulfield, a teenager with the ability to rewind time, and Chloe Price, her enigmatic best friend. Their story became one of the most emotional narratives in the indie game industry and built a devoted fan base. The franchise's journey, however, has not always been smooth. The latest sequel, Life Is Strange: Reunion, released this year, attempts to bring Max and Chloe back together as a conclusion to their story. Unfortunately, the game received mixed reviews; some critics felt the plot was too forced toward a happy ending, while others considered it a fitting farewell.
"We can't wait to show you what we did," Vincent De Paula wrote in his post, hinting at the production team's enthusiasm.
Although Reunion is described as the end of Max and Chloe's story in the game medium, the fate of the Life Is Strange franchise as a whole remains unclear. Square Enix has said that Reunion's sales exceeded expectations, but those expectations were relatively low following the poor performance of Double Exposure in 2024. To date, there has been no official announcement about the continuation of the game series, leaving a major question mark among fans.
This is where the Prime Video series could play a crucial role. If the adaptation succeeds commercially and critically, it is not impossible that Square Enix will look again at the franchise's potential for future projects. Conversely, failure could accelerate the end of Life Is Strange as a cultural phenomenon. The question is whether the small screen can revive the charm of Max and Chloe, or whether it will become the definitive conclusion to their story.
