An active presence on social media is now a determining factor in whether a brand appears in answers generated by artificial intelligence (AI). A recent study from SE Ranking found that links to social platforms appeared in 67.66% of Google AI Overview responses, 32.39% of AI Mode replies, and 8.4% of ChatGPT answers. The findings mark a shift in the information discovery landscape: from mere search engine optimization (SEO) toward optimization for AI engines.
The research analyzed 100,000 keywords across various brand niches to map the most frequently cited sources, both in Google search results and chatbot answers. As a result, YouTube—owned by Google—became the most popular source in AI Overview, while Reddit and LinkedIn dominated ChatGPT citations. Interestingly, although social media citations in ChatGPT are relatively small (under 1% for Reddit, LinkedIn, and Facebook), these platforms still appear when users look for product information.
However, reliance on specific platforms carries risk. Last August, Search Engine Land reported that Reddit's citation share in ChatGPT search plummeted 86.4% in just four days. The cause remains mysterious, but the phenomenon shows that AI policies can change at any time, making visibility strategies unstable. Meanwhile, Google still has a commercial data-sharing agreement with Reddit, so Reddit citations in Google's AI responses are relatively safe. This mutual dependence could become complicated if the platform's value to partners changes.
SE Ranking also examined 100,000 branded and non-branded queries in Google AI Mode. The result: social media sources were referenced in 39.34% of branded query responses and 48.58% of non-branded searches, with Facebook, YouTube, and Reddit the most frequently cited. This means there is no single approach to optimizing exposure in AI chatbots. Unlike SEO, which is dominated by Google, optimization for AI tools demands a strategy tailored to each platform.
"Social media is no longer just an engagement channel, but also a gateway for brands to be recognized by AI algorithms," the core of SE Ranking's findings reads.
For the Indonesian market, the implications are significant. With high internet penetration and growing AI adoption, local brands need to strengthen their presence on platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Without that, they risk losing visibility in next-generation search results. Moreover, AI is starting to become a primary reference source for consumers in choosing products or services.
Going forward, the question is no longer whether AI will change how brands are discovered, but how quickly businesses adapt. Those able to read this shift and build a strong digital footprint on social media will have a competitive advantage. Conversely, those who ignore it could be pushed off the radar of consumers who increasingly rely on AI.
