Taylor Simone Ledward, the widow of the late actor Chadwick Boseman, has strongly denied allegations that she misused her husband's estate, which is worth millions of dollars. In court documents filed in Los Angeles, she called the lawsuit brought by her brother-in-law a "public relations tactic" to tarnish her name.
The dispute erupted after Derrick and Kevin Boseman, Chadwick's brothers, filed a petition in July asking the court to remove Taylor from her position as estate administrator. They accused Taylor of failing to complete the distribution of assets in accordance with the 2022 probate order. However, Taylor denied this and stressed that almost all assets have been distributed, except for one account that has been held up by the opposing party's legal action.
In documents obtained by US Weekly, Taylor's lawyer, Adam Streisand, stated that his client not only complied with the court order but also went beyond her obligations thanks to extraordinary generosity. "Simone has acted transparently and consulted with the petitioners at every important step, without any obligation to do so," Streisand said. He added that the allegations of concealment and mismanagement have no strong basis.
Chadwick Boseman died in 2020 at the age of 43 from colon cancer without leaving a will. Under California inheritance law, his wife and both parents are legal heirs. However, because there was no will, the asset distribution process became complicated and triggered a prolonged dispute. To date, about $300,000 from SAG-AFTRA residual payments has been received and divided according to the specified portions.
"This is how the family is retaliating: a petition full of lies under oath, deliberately used as a public relations tactic to smear Simone in the tabloid media," Streisand wrote in the court document.
The dispute comes amid renewed attention to Boseman's artistic legacy. The play Deep Azure, which he wrote in 2005, was recently staged at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Shakespeare's Globe, London, and was extended by two weeks after opening. Taylor has also founded the Chadwick Boseman Foundation for the Arts and, according to court documents, has secured a deal for a documentary about her husband's legacy.
For the Indonesian public, this case is a mirror of how important estate planning is, especially for public figures with complex assets. In Indonesia, inheritance disputes without a will often end in family splits, as has happened with several local celebrities. This case also reminds us that an inheritance is not only about material things, but also about reputation and the cultural values left behind.
Going forward, the court will decide whether Taylor remains the administrator or is replaced. Regardless of the outcome, this case shows that even after death, family conflict can threaten an icon's legacy. Will a peaceful settlement be reached, or will it instead deepen the divisions that already exist?
