Leica has officially announced a major update to its iPhone camera app, Leica Lux 2.0, which will be available on the App Store in early October. The update brings a gallery interface identical to the Leica Fotos app, along with the latest Artist Look color profile created in collaboration with legendary photographer Steve McCurry. Alongside it, Leica is also launching a silver version of the Lux Grip and leather cases for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.
Lux 2.0 is the most significant update since the app first launched in 2024. Besides unifying the gallery layout with Leica Fotos, the app interface has been redesigned with icons inspired by classic Leica cameras. New features include a filmstrip for selecting images from the detail view, multi-select in the grid view, and the ability to open photos directly into Capture One or Adobe Lightroom, in addition to the existing Darkroom option. The app continues to offer Leica lens simulations and manual control over camera settings.
The Steve McCurry Artist Look is a color and tonal profile developed with the photographer known for the iconic portrait "Afghan Girl" (1985). It follows previous Artist Looks collaborations with photographer Greg Williams. Leica emphasizes that Artist Looks are not intended to replicate the photographer's work, but rather to give users a starting point to develop their own style.
The silver Lux Grip arrives after the black model launched in February 2025. Functionally identical, the device attaches to the iPhone via MagSafe and provides a two-stage shutter button, a settings dial, and two customizable function buttons. Its internal battery is claimed to capture 1,000 shots and is charged via USB-C. The Grip is compatible with the iPhone 12 and later models. The black leather cases for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have an integrated camera button rather than an open cutout, which according to Leica makes the case sturdier and the button more reliable.
"Artist Looks are not meant to imitate a photographer's work, but to give users a starting point to develop their own style," Leica explained in its announcement.
For the Indonesian market, the arrival of Lux 2.0 and these Leica accessories offers a new option for mobile photography enthusiasts who want a touch of traditional camera feel. With the Grip priced at around Rp6.3 million (exchange rate Rp16,000), the device targets the premium segment already accustomed to the Apple ecosystem. Meanwhile, the Lux 2.0 app is free to download, but full access to its features requires a Lux Pro subscription at $70 per year (around Rp1.1 million). The arrival of a case specifically for the iPhone 18 Pro also signals that Leica is serious about serving users of the latest iPhone, who typically adopt new technology faster.
Leica's move underscores the competition in computational photography. Third-party apps such as Halide, ProCam, and even Apple's built-in app continue to innovate. However, Leica offers a unique selling point: a globally recognized optical and aesthetic heritage. The collaboration with Steve McCurry is a draw in itself for photographers who admire the humanist documentary style. On the other hand, the high accessory prices could be a barrier for some users, especially in developing markets like Indonesia.
Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see whether Leica expands support for Android devices, given the large global market share. In addition, will this annual subscription model survive amid the trend of one-time-purchase photography apps? What is clear is that Leica continues to build an ecosystem that combines hardware, software, and a photographer community. For Indonesian consumers, the decision to buy will depend heavily on how much value they perceive from the exclusive features and brand prestige.
