Manchester United are reportedly showing serious interest in Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell to strengthen a left flank that has long been fragile. The move is believed not only to fix the back line but also to hold the key to restoring Marcus Rashford's sharpness, as he has often struggled to perform consistently without the support of a solid left-back.
Over the past few seasons, Rashford's form has depended heavily on the presence of Luke Shaw. When Shaw is fit and playing regularly, Rashford becomes a major threat on the left wing. Data shows that in the 2020/21 season, when Shaw recorded the most minutes in the Premier League, Rashford scored 11 goals. In 2018/19, with Shaw also fit, Rashford bagged 10 goals. The peak came in 2022/23, when Shaw was again a first-choice pick, and Rashford surged to 17 league goals. This correlation confirms that a consistent left-back greatly affects the productivity of a winger.
Unfortunately, Shaw's physical condition has recently become a major problem. The 31-year-old defender has missed several important matches, including the Manchester derby and games against Sabah and Brighton. As a result, United's management under INEOS has begun looking for a long-term solution. Mitchell's name has emerged as a realistic option because his contract at Crystal Palace expires next summer. According to a Football Insider report, the 27-year-old is said to be 'very interested' in joining Old Trafford and would 'find it hard to refuse' if an offer comes. Liverpool are also reported to be monitoring the situation.
Mitchell is not the type of left-back who only defends. Over the past few years, he has often been deployed as a wing-back at Selhurst Park, so he is used to helping the attack. His ability to deliver crosses and create chances is an added value. In the 2024/25 season, he recorded five assists and created 11 big chances, figures better than United's current left-backs. He has even just scored twice against Fulham, showing his offensive instinct.
Mitchell's arrival would have two direct impacts. First, he could be a backup as well as healthy competition for Shaw, reducing the burden on an injury-prone full-back. Second, with a more aggressive left-back pushing forward, Rashford or Matheus Cunha would not have to work alone on the left. So far, Rashford has often been forced to drift wide to find the ball because of the lack of overlapping support from left-back. With Mitchell, he could focus more on driving into the penalty box and maximizing chances.
Even so, that does not mean Rashford is free from criticism. He still creates plenty of chances (13 chances created, third in the league) and touches in the opposition box (33, second), but his finishing has not been consistent. Manager Michael Carrick needs to find the right formula to maximize Rashford's potential, especially with the return of Amad Diallo, which will shift Bryan Mbeumo to the number nine position. Competition on the left wing between Rashford and Cunha will only get tighter, and Mitchell's presence could be the difference.
"Rashford needs someone he can rely on behind him. When Shaw plays, Rashford looks freer. Mitchell has a similar profile, and that could be a big advantage," said a tactical observer who declined to be named.
