- Perubahan besar ini menandai pergeseran strategi Bungie dari gim ekstraksi kompetitif ke pengalaman yang lebih inklusif bagi pemain kasual.

Bungie has officially announced that the extraction shooter Marathon will receive its first permanent PvE mode as part of a major update titled Symbiosis, scheduled for release on December 8, 2026. The move marks a fundamental shift from the original concept that emphasized intense competition between players.
In an official blog post, Game Director Del Chafe III and Creative Director Julia Nardin explained that Marathon had been positioned as a "brutal, winner-takes-all PvEvP experience." However, they realized that approach limited the game's appeal. "Some players want a short, low-pressure session after work. Others want to spend the whole night with their team. Some want to test builds, compete head-on, chase difficult challenges, or follow strange clues into the ruins of Tau Ceti IV," the two wrote. "Marathon has to support all of it."
The Symbiosis update will introduce a PvE mode that lets players explore, experiment, and face challenges without the fear of being hunted by other players. In addition, a competitive Team Deathmatch mode will be added, expanding competitive play options beyond extraction. The beginner-friendly Perimeter map will also be expanded with significant visual changes, and a new Shell named Bishop—described as a high-performance robot samurai—will be introduced. "Bishop is a fast, precise killer, built for speed, surprise, and devastating melee attacks," Bungie explained.
For new players, Bungie is also improving the onboarding process and adding a social space with a built-in shooting range. Meanwhile, Marathon's next major evolution will only arrive in March 2027, with a promise of continued development beyond that. Since its launch in March 2026, Marathon has received a warm reception from critics and players, but Bungie acknowledges the game was too challenging and limited for a broad audience. Now, the studio aims to deliver more than just a well-designed extraction loop, opening access to lore and gameplay for a wider audience.
"Marathon needs to support all types of players, from those who want a casual session to those chasing competitive challenges." — Del Chafe III and Julia Nardin, Bungie
Indonesian Context: Bungie's strategy shift could affect Indonesia's game market, which is dominated by casual and mobile players. With a permanent PvE mode, Marathon has the potential to attract more Indonesian gamers who previously hesitated to try extraction shooters due to high competitive pressure. If Bungie expands access to platforms such as cloud gaming or adjusts regional pricing, its market share in Southeast Asia could rise significantly. In addition, local gaming communities often rely on cooperative modes to build a fan base; this move could be a catalyst for the growth of the Marathon community in Indonesia.
Looking ahead, the question is how far Bungie will change Marathon's identity without losing its core appeal. If Symbiosis succeeds, the game could become an example of how competitive games adapt to the needs of a broader audience—a valuable lesson for Indonesian game developers looking to break into the global market.
