The Indonesia national team will begin its FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 campaign against Singapore in the first match of Group A Premier Division at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, on Friday (25/9/2026). The fixture is in the spotlight as it will set the tone for Indonesia's path in the tournament, which is included in the official FIFA calendar for the first time.
FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 comes with a different format from previous regional tournaments. The competition features 14 countries, consisting of 11 AFF members plus three invited teams from Asia: Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Hong Kong-China. Participants are divided into two tiers: the Premier Division as the top tier and the Challenge Division as the second tier.
Indonesia has been entrusted to host Group A Premier Division, which also includes Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Singapore. All group matches will be held at SUGBK. Meanwhile, Group B comprises Vietnam, Pakistan, Thailand, and the Philippines, with matches staged at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Bandung. Notably, there is no semifinal round; the winners of Group A and Group B meet directly in the final to contest the Premier Division trophy.
Matches against Singapore always carry their own tension. Of the 60 meetings, Indonesia have recorded 30 wins, 11 draws, and 19 defeats. However, the last match on 7 August 2026 ended 1-1 at the 2026 AFF Cup, a result that sent Singapore to the semifinals while Indonesia had to pack their bags early. That fact is a reminder that dominance over Singapore can no longer be taken for granted.
"We must make the most of our status as hosts. The first match against Singapore will determine the momentum for the entire tournament," said a national football observer, responding to the group draw.
For Indonesia, this tournament is not merely a stage for regional prestige. Because it is part of the official FIFA calendar, every match result will affect the world ranking. A win over Singapore, for instance, could provide valuable additional points to improve Indonesia's position in the FIFA ranking, which has long been an indicator of the strength of the national game.
On the broadcasting side, FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 can be watched on Indosiar, SCTV, Vidio, Moji, and Nex Parabola. The combination of national television channels and digital platforms makes it easier for the public to follow every match, including games involving other teams in the same group.
The Challenge Division is held centrally in Hong Kong-China. Group A features Hong Kong-China, Laos, and Brunei Darussalam, while Group B consists of Cambodia, Myanmar, and Timor-Leste. The two-division format allows lower-ranked countries to keep competing at an appropriate level, while also giving them a chance of promotion in the next edition.
With a challenging group composition, Indonesia are required to be consistent from the start. The match against Singapore will be a test of tactics and mentality, especially as Singapore arrive with confidence after beating Indonesia at the 2026 AFF Cup. Can Indonesia harness the support of their fans at SUGBK to take all three points and open the road to the final?
