Adobe has officially taken over Topaz Labs, the startup known for its artificial intelligence-based image upscaling and denoising tools. The deal, first announced in June, closed on 23 September, marking a strategic move by Adobe to strengthen its creative portfolio amid competition among editing tools that increasingly rely on AI.
Topaz Labs will not disappear. Its standalone apps remain available, while its CEO joins Adobe's Digital Video and Audio division. The most anticipated part, however, is the fate of Topaz technology that has already slipped into several Adobe products, such as AI Sharpen, AI Denoise, and Generative Upscale in Photoshop, as well as the video upscaler in Firefly Boards.
The big question: what does this mean in practice for creators? Deepa Subramaniam, Adobe's VP of Product Marketing for Creative Professionals, gave a strong hint that video enhancement features will soon reach more workflows. "Restoring archival footage, refining low-light shots, enhancing phone clips, preparing content for the big screen, and bringing AI-generated video to professional quality through creative upscaling will soon be possible in more existing workflows," she said.
This move is not merely business expansion. Adobe is building an ecosystem that lets creators complete more tasks without jumping between software. Subramaniam stressed that Adobe technology will also improve Topaz Labs' models, creating a two-way innovation loop. She also stated that the future of creativity will still be determined by storytelling and human skill, regardless of whether content is captured with a professional camera, a phone, or generated by AI.
For Indonesia, this acquisition could accelerate the adoption of AI workflows in the local creative industry. Production houses, freelance video editors, and advertising agencies that already rely on Adobe Creative Cloud could potentially enjoy video enhancement features directly in the apps they use daily. However, there is an important caveat: these advanced features usually require a certain subscription tier and capable hardware. In a price-sensitive market like Indonesia, the pace of adoption will depend heavily on Adobe's pricing strategy and the availability of local language and payment support.
Moreover, this integration could trigger a new wave in competition among AI-based editing tools. Market players such as Blackmagic Design with DaVinci Resolve or startups offering similar solutions must innovate faster or find niches Adobe does not cover. Meanwhile, loyal Topaz Labs users may worry about the future of the standalone apps they use. Although Adobe promises to keep them available, the history of acquisitions in the technology industry often ends in the gradual discontinuation of overlapping products.

Going forward, the public is waiting to see exactly when Topaz-based video upscaling features will land in Premiere Pro or After Effects. If Subramaniam's prediction is right, 2025 could be the year video quality enhancement becomes a new standard at the editing desk. The question is whether Adobe will open access as widely as possible or instead make it an exclusive feature for its highest-priced plans. That answer will determine how big the impact is for the creative community in Indonesia and globally.
