After almost a year on the sidelines, Dean James has finally returned to strengthen the Indonesian national team. The Go Ahead Eagles wing-back arrived in Jakarta on Wednesday (23/9/2026) to join the training camp ahead of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup, a tournament that will be held in Indonesia from 25 September to 5 October.
James's last call-up came in October 2025. Since then, he has been absent from two FIFA Matchdays and the 2026 AFF Cup. The reasons varied, including his connection to the passportgate issue that had surfaced. Now, James's return is valuable additional ammunition for the Garuda squad as it prepares to host Division 1 of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup.
James's presence immediately creates fierce competition on the left side of defense. He must compete with Calvin Verdonk, Shayne Pattynama, and Nathan Tjoe-A-On for the left fullback or wing-back position. Since being naturalized in March 2025, James has made only five appearances for the Indonesian national team, all as a starter. If coach John Herdman chooses Verdonk as a central midfielder, James's chance to return as a starter is wide open.
The Indonesian national team itself held its first training session at Madya Stadium, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (22/9/2026) with 21 players. Herdman confirmed that James and Verdonk would join on the same day. "They will arrive today. They played a match that ended late on Sunday, so they will be here and hopefully can train tomorrow afternoon," Herdman said, as quoted from an official statement.
James's return is a breath of fresh air for Indonesia's back line, which has often been plagued by injuries and rotation. His flexibility on the left allows Herdman to use a three-back or four-back scheme without reducing attacking power. The presence of a player competing in the Dutch Eredivisie also adds international experience to a squad that is still relatively young on average.
For Indonesian football, James's return is not merely a technical matter. It marks the end of a period of uncertainty that had disrupted the team's stability. The passportgate issue that dragged his name into it is a valuable lesson about the importance of administrative governance for naturalized players. Going forward, PSSI is expected to be more responsive in anticipating similar polemics so that players can focus on contributing without non-technical burdens.
With James joining, competition on the left flank is heating up further. Verdonk, who usually plays as a defensive midfielder, could be moved to his natural position, giving Herdman more varied tactical options. Meanwhile, Pattynama and Tjoe-A-On are also hungry for playing time. This situation demands that every player perform consistently if they want to secure a place in the starting eleven.
The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup will be a proving ground for James. After a long absence, he needs to prove that he is still worthy of being a first-choice option. If he can perform impressively, it is not impossible that he will become a regular in the Garuda squad for future agendas, including the Asian Cup and 2030 World Cup qualifiers. Can James win back Herdman's trust and lead Indonesia to glory on home soil?
