Prince Harry is reportedly exploring various potential projects to mark the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana's death, which falls on August 31. According to PEOPLE magazine, the 42-year-old Duke of Sussex is considering several ideas, including a documentary production. However, no project has been officially confirmed or finalized yet.
Harry's move comes amid renewed dynamics within the royal family. Days earlier, King Charles reportedly criticized Earl Spencer—Diana's late brother—regarding claims in his new book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister. In the book, Earl Spencer claimed that Charles had once said Diana would be "soon forgotten" in a phone conversation shortly after her death. Buckingham Palace released a rare statement asserting that the earl's grief had "clouded his reasoning and affected his judgment" of the events.
Harry, who was only 12 when his mother died, is said to have contacted several relatives and friends of his late mother to explore project ideas. In 2017, he and Prince William spoke openly about losing their mother in the documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. Now, the three-decade anniversary presents a significant moment for Harry to once again commemorate Diana from a personal perspective.
Meanwhile, the British documentary industry is also moving to embrace this moment. Independent production house Love Monday TV is working on Diana Unheard, a documentary that relies on intimate, never-before-published recordings. Richard Life, SVP Acquisitions and Co-productions at Cineflix Rights, stated that the uniqueness of this project lies in the opportunity to hear Diana's own voice narrating her story at a crucial point in her life. The recordings originated from Diana's secret conversations with her friend, James Colthurst, in 1991, which later became material for Andrew Morton's controversial book, Diana: Her True Story.
"We want to challenge the narrative that too often portrays Diana simply as a victim of circumstance. This is Diana taking control of her own narrative," said Kerene Barefield, Creative Director of Love Monday TV.
For the Indonesian public, Princess Diana continues to hold a special place. Her life story, filled with pressure, divorce, and involvement in various social issues, made her a global icon transcending royal boundaries. Interest in such documentaries in Indonesia is quite high, especially on increasingly accessible streaming platforms. This 30th anniversary could be a moment for reflection on how media shapes the narrative of a public figure, and how royal families manage their emotional legacy in the digital age.
Looking ahead, the question is not only whether Harry's project will materialize, but also how he will balance personal tribute with unceasing public pressure. Will this documentary be Harry's way of closing old wounds, or will it open a new chapter in royal family tensions?
