Television presenter Richard Arnold, known as the Entertainment Editor for ITV's breakfast show Good Morning Britain, has married his partner, Stuart, after more than two decades together. The ceremony took place at Hackney Town Hall, London, last weekend, and was attended by close relatives and friends.
Arnold first shared the happy news via his personal Instagram account. However, the post initially caused confusion as the ring emoji used was mistaken for an engagement announcement, not a wedding. Co-host Kate Garraway corrected this understanding on air, which Arnold then clarified directly.
“It really is a wedding... it's me and my partner, Stuart, who is now my husband,” Arnold said, as quoted from a studio conversation. He admitted that calling Stuart his husband felt strange after being together for so long, especially when said consciously. “It does feel weird, but that's the reality,” he added.
Arnold also revealed that his brother-in-law flew from Melbourne to attend the special moment, accompanied by his closest friends. Public confusion began when he uploaded a photo of his pet dog, Clementine, wearing a white bow tie that read “I do too”, with the caption “The splice of life” and a ring emoji. Many celebrity colleagues mistook it for an engagement announcement and immediately flooded the comments section with congratulations.
“Biggest and best news – huge congratulations and so much love,” wrote Susanna Reid, co-host of Good Morning Britain, on Instagram.
Similar well wishes came from Charlotte Hawkins, Ruth Langsford, as well as EastEnders star Cheryl Fergison and Coronation Street actress Catherine Tyldesley. The warm support from industry colleagues demonstrates the growing acceptance of same-sex marriage among British public figures.
Although this news originates from the British entertainment world, its resonance is also felt in Indonesia. Same-sex marriage remains a sensitive topic in the country, but Arnold's story can serve as a reflection of how social norms in other countries continue to evolve. For some, this could spark discussions about inclusivity and human rights, while others might view it as a Western cultural phenomenon far removed from local realities.
From the entertainment industry's perspective, Arnold's marriage is not just social media fodder but also strengthens Good Morning Britain's image as an inclusive program. Some observers believe that moments like this can broaden the audience base and strengthen fan loyalty, especially among younger and more progressive demographics.
Moving forward, the public will await whether Arnold will share more details about his new life or choose to maintain privacy. What is clear is that this news has added to the long list of celebrities openly celebrating love and commitment, while also raising questions about how Indonesian media will report on similar issues without falling into prejudice.
