FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed he will personally attend the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, which will take place in Indonesia and Hong Kong from September 25 to October 5, 2026. Infantino announced this certainty via his personal Instagram account, @gianni_infantino, some time ago.
The presence of FIFA's top official in Indonesia is more than just a ceremonial visit. This tournament is a new competition established by FIFA, specifically targeting Southeast Asian teams, plus several invited nations. Indonesia has been appointed as the host for Division 1, involving eight countries divided into two groups, while Hong Kong will host Division 2, featuring six teams also split into two groups.
Infantino stated that this event is part of FIFA's mission to expand the map of official competitions. "This is FIFA's objective. We want to create new FIFA competitions worldwide to make football truly global," he said. He also affirmed that he would be on-site to enjoy the matches.
For Indonesia, this trust is both a test and an opportunity. Infantino mentioned PSSI, under the leadership of Erick Thohir, as one of the parties instrumental in realizing this new tournament. "My sincerest thanks to President Pui from Hong Kong, China, and President Erick Thohir from Indonesia, along with their teams, all the people, and their respective countries," said Infantino.
"Millions of fans worldwide, especially in Southeast Asia, as well as in our two host countries, Hong Kong, China, and Indonesia, will also enjoy this event in a special way." — Gianni Infantino
From the perspective of national football, the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 could be a stepping stone to gauge the quality of the Indonesian National Team at a more structured regional level. Unlike the AFF Cup, which is managed by the ASEAN federation, this tournament is directly under FIFA's umbrella, meaning its standards for organization, refereeing, and global broadcasting are expected to be higher. This also opens opportunities for young Indonesian players to perform on a stage watched by millions of international viewers.
However, challenges remain. Indonesia must ensure the readiness of stadiums, transportation, accommodation, and match protocols meet FIFA standards. The experience of hosting the U-17 World Cup 2023 can be an asset, but the scale and expectations for the FIFA ASEAN Cup are different, as it involves more countries and global media attention.
On the other hand, Infantino's presence has the potential to boost the tournament's economic value, from ticket sales and broadcasting rights to tourism impact in the host cities. Local governments and sponsors are expected to compete to leverage this moment for promotion.
Equally important, this event serves as a proving ground for PSSI in professionally managing international events. If successful, it is not impossible for Indonesia to become a regular host for future FIFA tournaments, including potentially being part of inter-continental competitions.
The question is, can Indonesia leverage the presence of Infantino and the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 not just as a temporary football celebration, but as a foundation for achieving higher accomplishments in Asian and global arenas?
