The German national team will wear an Adidas-made jersey for the last time in the UEFA Nations League match against the Netherlands on Thursday (local time). The match marks the end of a 72-year partnership between Adidas and the German Football Association (DFB), which has produced four World Cup titles and three European Championship trophies.
The DFB's decision to switch to Nike starting 1 January 2027 led Adidas to release one final design that will be worn for the first time against the Netherlands. The jersey features gold stripes on a black background, as posted by Adidas on its official Instagram account. Although already produced, the kit is not yet available for public purchase.
For more than seven decades, the Adidas logo has been attached to German kits in various historic moments, including four world titles and three European titles. The switch to Nike not only ends the dominance of the German brand at national team level, but also marks a shift in the DFB's commercial strategy toward pursuing broader global opportunities. Some observers consider the decision bold, given that Adidas is an icon of German football identity.
Germany's new coach, Jürgen Klopp, will lead the team during this international break. The controversial jersey is likely also to be worn against Greece twice and Serbia. Nevertheless, Adidas has not announced an official sales schedule, so fans must be patient to own this historic collectible.
"This is a historic moment for German football. Adidas has been part of our identity, and this farewell feels emotional," said a source at the DFB as quoted by German media.
For Indonesia, the change of the German national team's jersey supplier could reflect how football federations in Southeast Asia, including PSSI, manage commercial partnerships. PSSI itself currently works with local and international brands, and the DFB's decision shows that brand loyalty can be outweighed by larger financial offers. This also affects the global retail market, where the Adidas version of the German jersey is predicted to become a high-value collectible.
Going forward, the question is whether Nike can deliver innovation equal to Adidas's legacy, or whether Adidas will instead respond with an aggressive strategy in other markets. Meanwhile, fans around the world, including in Indonesia, will watch the Germany vs Netherlands match as the closing of a long chapter full of memories.
