Manchester United have reportedly taken concrete steps to sign young Lens midfielder Mezian Mesloub, as part of a long-term plan to address the uncertain future of JJ Gabriel. According to TEAMtalk, the Red Devils' recruitment team is currently gathering data and conducting thorough checks on the 16-year-old player, who has garnered attention this season after breaking into the Lens first team and making his Champions League debut.
Gabriel, who is only 15 years old, has reportedly requested to leave Manchester United due to his continued exclusion from Michael Carrick's first-team plans. Despite this, the club is not standing idly by. Sporting director Jason Wilcox is reportedly still trying to convince Gabriel to stay, while journalist Henry Winter believes that the development of young players cannot be artificially accelerated.
"JJ Gabriel is clearly a special talent, but he is only 15 years old. He cannot yet change in the senior dressing room. Physically, he is not ready for first-team football. The development pathway is not a fast track. It's all about gradually integrating Gabriel, honing his physical and tactical development, letting him grow. Because his talent is undoubtedly there," Winter said.
Mesloub himself is no ordinary talent. The Portuguese-born player has made five senior appearances for Lens, contributing one goal and one assist. Even more impressively, he scored just five seconds after coming on as a substitute in his professional debut last May, and registered an assist on his Champions League debut against Slavia Prague this month. Talent scout Jacek Kulig described Lens as having a very special gem.
However, Manchester United's path will not be smooth. Arsenal and Chelsea are also reportedly monitoring Mesloub and could potentially make offers in 2027. This competition among Premier League clubs adds complexity to negotiations, especially since Mesloub's status as a young player with immense potential continuously drives up his price and expectations.
For Manchester United, the interest in Mesloub reflects a recruitment strategy increasingly focused on young talent. The club appears keen to build a long-term foundation by securing players who can become the backbone of the team in the next five to ten years. However, regulations on underage player transfers are a major obstacle. Mesloub will not be able to join United's academy or first team before 2028, unless a rarely granted exception is made.
From an Indonesian perspective, this transfer dynamic offers insight into how major European clubs manage the transition of young players. Liga 1 clubs and national football academies can learn valuable lessons about the importance of patience in youth development, and how international regulations shape recruitment strategies. Furthermore, the phenomena of Gabriel and Mesloub highlight how vulnerable big clubs are in retaining young talent from the allure of other clubs, even before they break into the first team.
Moving forward, the future of both Gabriel and Mesloub will heavily depend on negotiations and regulatory decisions. If Gabriel indeed leaves, Manchester United must act quickly to secure an alternative, but they also cannot force Mesloub to move earlier. The question remains: will the Red Devils be able to retain Gabriel, or will they have to accept losing two talents simultaneously in quick succession?
