Kim Kardashian has officially won a civil lawsuit related to the armed robbery she suffered in Paris in 2016. The court ruled she is entitled to symbolic damages of €1, or about Rp17 thousand, after a lengthy legal process.
The robbery, which took place in a room at the Hôtel de Pourtalès, involved a group of armed men who made off with $10 million worth of jewelry. Eight defendants, including the mastermind Aomar Ait Khedache, alias "Old Omar", were found guilty in May last year. However, all were released after serving the time they had already spent in custody.
In her civil suit, Kardashian did not seek large material damages. Instead, she asked for a symbolic ruling as a form of moral accountability. Her stylist, Simone Harouche, who was also at the scene and hid in the bathroom during the incident, received the same amount.
A joint statement from the two emphasized that the court's decision was not about compensation, but about accountability and recognition. "The experience was deeply traumatic, and its effects are still felt. We thank the court and everyone who supported us," they said.
During the trial, Kardashian said she had forgiven the perpetrators. She even said she appreciated a letter of apology sent by one of the defendants. "I forgive you. But that does not change the emotions, feelings, and trauma I experienced," she said. She also revealed that she thought she would die when the perpetrators pointed a gun at her and taped her mouth shut.
"I prayed for my family, hoping they could live well after it happened. I was sure I would be shot dead on the bed, and Kourtney would see it," Kardashian recalled.
This case highlights the difference between restorative and retributive justice. Although the perpetrators were convicted, the punishment they served does not match the psychological trauma experienced by the victim. A civil suit with symbolic demands becomes a way to assert that victims want recognition, not just money.
For the Indonesian public, this case is a mirror of how the legal system can give victims room to demand moral accountability. In Indonesia, civil lawsuits often focus on material damages, while the aspect of trauma recovery is often overlooked. This ruling could set a precedent that immaterial losses also deserve to be taken into account.
Going forward, will symbolic verdicts like this be used more often to emphasize a more humane aspect of justice? Or will they instead be seen as failing to deter? What is clear is that for Kardashian, her legal battle was more about healing than about numbers.
