Rob Lowe, the 62-year-old veteran Hollywood actor, revealed that his involvement in the film The Outsiders (1983) was a turning point that completely changed his life. In an interview with People, Lowe recalled how the role propelled him from an ordinary teenager to an idol, even pursued by fans to his home.
"Overnight, everything changed. I went from being a nobody to suddenly having girls breaking into my house and stealing my underwear," Lowe said, as quoted by People. The film, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, also starred a string of names who would later become big stars, such as Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell, and Diane Lane.
Lowe believes The Outsiders sparked what he calls "the explosion of youth in film and television." He explained that in the early 1980s, there were no channels like Nickelodeon, so the idea of having a career or becoming famous at a young age was still considered foreign, even in Los Angeles. "People didn't understand what I was trying to do," he added.
In a separate interview with GQ, Lowe once cited "resilience" as the main key to his long career in Hollywood. When asked to name his greatest virtue, he replied, "My optimism. Optimism leads to resilience, and resilience is the key to surviving a long career and a happy personal life. You fall, you get back up, you have a long day, and you're ready for the next one. That's invaluable."
"I wake up in the middle of the night to eat a pint of ice cream. I don't know where it came from—I've never been like that in my life. But that's my new burden," Lowe joked when asked about his bad habits.
Despite being known for his strict discipline in maintaining health and fitness, Lowe admitted he occasionally likes to indulge himself. Joking, he mentioned his current bad habit is waking up in the middle of the night to eat a pint of chocolate ice cream. "I say to myself, 'What can solve this problem? A pint of chocolate ice cream,'" he said.
