Home Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian inspected the Enang-Enang Bridge in Bener Meriah Regency, Aceh, on Tuesday (7/7/2026). The visit underscores that the central government is directly overseeing post-disaster infrastructure recovery in the Sumatra region, with public safety as the top priority.
The bridge, previously built by the community on a self-help basis, serves as the lifeline for daily mobility. However, its structural condition is deemed insufficient to bear the load of heavy-tonnage vehicles. As a result, only motorcycles and light vehicles are temporarily allowed to cross, while trucks and other heavy vehicles must wait for the technical assessment from the Aceh National Road Implementation Agency (BPJN).
As head of the Sumatra Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (PRR) Acceleration Task Force, Tito did not only inspect the bridge. He also reviewed the condition of disaster-affected roads around the site. This step is part of the government's effort to ensure that every technical decision in the field prioritizes safety, not merely the speed of recovery.
The government plans to reinforce the structure of the Enang-Enang Bridge. However, the option of reinforcement or rebuilding still awaits a recommendation from the Aceh BPJN. While waiting, alternative road handling is being prepared to maintain the flow of goods distribution and residents' mobility during the rehabilitation period. This is important given that Bener Meriah is one of the main arabica coffee-producing areas in Aceh, so smooth logistics strongly affect the local economy.
"Infrastructure recovery continues to prioritize public safety," Tito said during the inspection, as quoted from an official statement.
For readers in Indonesia, especially businesses and investors, this development signals that the government is serious about handling connectivity in disaster-prone areas. Reliable infrastructure will lower logistics costs and accelerate post-disaster economic recovery. On the other hand, temporary access limitations may disrupt the supply chain of flagship commodities such as coffee, potentially affecting prices in the regional market.
Going forward, the Aceh BPJN's decision on the feasibility of the Enang-Enang Bridge will be decisive. If the bridge is reinforced, the recovery time could be shorter. However, if it must be rebuilt, additional budget and time will be required. What is clear is that the government appears unwilling to take risks by allowing heavy vehicles to cross before there is a safety guarantee. The question is, how quickly will the technical assessment be completed so that Bener Meriah's economic wheels can turn normally again?
