Borussia Dortmund maintained their unbeaten record in the Bundesliga after defeating promoted side Elversberg 2-1 at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday (2/11/2024). Felix Nmecha was the star with his two second-half goals, while Elversberg showed they are no opponent to be underestimated.
The win extends Dortmund's impressive run to nine league matches without defeat this season. Even so, the match was not as straightforward as expected. Elversberg, newly promoted, played boldly and troubled the hosts at times, especially in the first half.
Dortmund coach Niko Kovaฤ made three changes from the 2-1 win over Real Betis in the Champions League. Joane Gadou, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Konstantinos Karetsas came in for the injured Ramy Bensebaini, Julian Ryerson, and Serhou Guirassy. Meanwhile, Elversberg coach Vincent Wagner named the same formation that beat Mainz 4-1 the previous week.
Elversberg did not sit back. They threatened several times through Lukas Petkov, who tested goalkeeper Gregor Kobel twice. Dortmund themselves lost Chukwuemeka to injury in the 34th minute, replaced by Maximilian Beier. Elversberg captain Lukas Pinckert also had to be withdrawn after a collision, replaced by Florian Le Joncour. The score stayed 0-0 until half-time.
In the second half, Dortmund raised the intensity. Jobe Bellingham and Karetsas spurned chances before Nmecha finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute. Receiving a pass from Fabio Silva, the number 8 midfielder fired a low shot into the bottom corner. Sixteen minutes later, Nmecha scored again with a spectacular curling strike from outside the penalty area that left goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof rooted to the spot.
Elversberg did not give up. In the 81st minute, substitute Noel Futkeu pulled one back with an acrobatic finish from Le Joncour's header. The goal put Dortmund under pressure in the closing minutes, but their defense held out until the final whistle.
Despite the win, Dortmund showed vulnerability. The xG statistics show Elversberg actually created the bigger chances (1.38 to 1.12). This is a note for Kovaฤ to improve the effectiveness of his back line. On the other side, Elversberg proved they deserve to compete in the Bundesliga. With performances like this, it is not impossible they will steal points from the big teams.
For Dortmund, the win keeps momentum ahead of a busy schedule. They will face tough challenges in the Champions League and Bundesliga in the coming weeks. Nmecha's consistency in midfield will be key. Meanwhile, Elversberg will look to bounce back when they host their next opponent. Can Dortmund keep their unbeaten record until the end of the season? Or will Elversberg become the new surprise in the Bundesliga?
