Modern Warfare 4: Intel Explosion on the Battlefield Threatens Player Skill
Baca dalam 60 detik
- Modern Warfare 4 menawarkan mekanisme permainan yang memukau, tetapi memperparah masalah klasik Call of Duty: terlalu banyak perangkat pengintai yang membuat pemain saling ketergantungan.
- Dengan sepuluh opsi intel seperti UAV dan Snapshot Grenade, pemain dipaksa memakai counter seperti Ghost atau Cold-Blooded, sehingga variasi strategi tergerus.
- Penurunan skill ceiling ini berpotensi menurunkan daya tarik kompetitif jangka panjang, sementara playlist Barebones dan Ranked Play belum tersedia di peluncuran.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has drawn immediate praise for its satisfying shooting mechanics and smoother movement compared with the Black Ops series. Yet behind that positive impression lies an increasingly acute structural problem: an abundance of reconnaissance devices that makes combat feel more like a gadget race than a contest of shooting skill.
Since the era of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007), the series has been known for its steep learning curve. Back then, players could rely only on the same three killstreaks, a limited set of modes, and one weapon attachment—red dot, ACOG, or silencer. It was precisely amid that simplicity that players willing to learn the maps, sightlines, and recoil patterns were rewarded with a real advantage. Individual skill was the main currency.
As customization options grew from World at War to Modern Warfare 2, the skill floor rose, but the skill ceiling actually fell. Modern Warfare 4 is the peak of that trend. In a single loadout, a player can carry up to ten devices that track or reveal enemy positions: UAV, Advanced UAV, Snapshot Grenade, Heartbeat Sensor, Portable Radar, Seeker Drone, Recon Drone, High Alert, Birdseye, and Tracker.
Some devices are indeed stronger than others. The Heartbeat Sensor, for instance, is too slow for respawn modes, while Tracker is highly situational. However, the popularity of UAV and Snapshot Grenade forces players to always prepare a counter. Ghost makes users undetectable to UAV, Portable Radar, and Heartbeat Sensor; Cold-Blooded counters AI targeting systems, thermal optics, Recon Drone, Spotter Scope, Snapshot Grenade, and High Alert. There is also the SAM Airburst Turret to shoot down UAVs, the Trophy System to destroy grenades, DDOS to disable sensors, and Counter UAV to scramble the enemy's minimap.
As a consequence, nearly every loadout must be filled with counter devices. Flexibility erodes. Players who want to try Razor Wire Trap or Kill Chain—which lets kills from a killstreak contribute half a point toward the next streak—must be willing to give up Ghost. The choice becomes monotonous: either use intel or be prepared to be blinded by the enemy's intel.
"Call of Duty is at its best when assistance to players is limited, so they have to rely on their own knowledge and skill," an industry observer said in criticism cited by Polygon.
Hope for a return to the game's roots did once exist through the Barebones playlist, which limited killstreaks, perks, and equipment. However, that playlist last appeared in Modern Warfare (2019) and most likely will not return. Ranked Play, the competitive alternative, was also not available in Modern Warfare 4 at launch, and there is no certainty about when it will arrive.
For the Indonesian market, where Call of Duty Mobile and Warzone remain dominant, this phenomenon deserves attention. The local esports community that grew from the mobile and battle royale scene could be affected if the premium Call of Duty versions drift further from the principle of pure skill. Local tournaments that usually rely on competitive modes face regulatory uncertainty because Ranked Play is not yet available.
Going forward, the decision by Infinity Ward and Activision to reduce the number of intel devices in the 2027 release will be a test. Will they dare to lower complexity to restore the glory of skill-based gameplay, or will they keep adding features to appear innovative? The answer will determine the direction of this series in the eyes of hardcore players and the global esports community.
