The Democratic Party secured control of the United States Senate and House of Representatives, while also winning several key governor seats in the 2026 midterm elections. The victory marks a significant shift in power in Congress, although many seats have yet to be called.
According to The Guardian, as of this report, Democrats have secured a majority in both chambers of Congress. Previously, Republicans controlled the Senate and the House. The Democratic win in the Senate required at least three of six seats rated as too close to call (toss-up) by the Cook Political Report. Meanwhile, in the House, Democrats only needed to hold 18 seats that leaned their way without having to win any toss-up seats.
The Democratic win in the Senate was driven by their success in key states. Before the election, the Cook Political Report classified six Senate seats as toss-ups. Democrats needed to win at least three of them, in addition to the seats already projected to be theirs. Meanwhile, in the House, Republicans were favored in 195 seats and only needed to sweep all 18 toss-up seats and flip five seats that leaned Democratic to retain their majority. However, the final results said otherwise.
This year's midterms also included governor races in 36 states and three territories. Previously, Republicans and Democrats each held 18 governor seats. Three incumbent governors chose to retire. The final results showed Democrats managed to add to their collection of governor seats, although the state-by-state details were not yet fully available.
"This victory is a strong signal that the American people want a change in policy direction," said a political analyst quoted by The Guardian.
The Democratic victory in Congress will affect the course of the sitting President's administration. By controlling the House, Democrats can block the president's legislative agenda and launch investigations into executive policy. Meanwhile, in the Senate, they have the votes to approve or reject nominations for senior officials, including Supreme Court justices, as well as to ratify international treaties.
For Indonesia, the change in the US political composition could affect bilateral relations, particularly in trade policy, investment, and security. The US is one of Indonesia's main trading partners. A US foreign policy that may be more progressive under a Democratic-controlled Congress could influence trade negotiations and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. In addition, the climate change issue, which is a top Democratic agenda, could encourage closer environmental cooperation with Indonesia.
Nevertheless, the results of this midterm election are not final because several seats have yet to be called. The Associated Press (AP) will declare a winner in a state when the trailing candidate has no path to victory. This process can take up to several days after polling day. The question is, will this blue wave last until the 2028 presidential election, or will it instead become a momentum for Republicans to rise again?
