Renowned author Andy Weir, known for the novels The Martian and Project Hail Mary, is back with an ambitious project titled Exoplanet. This work is not an ordinary novel but an original audio drama that will launch exclusively on Audible on November 5. This time Weir is not writing the script; he serves as executive producer, while the creative pen is entrusted to Benjamin Percy, author of the novels The Ninth Metal and Red Moon.
Exoplanet tells the story of a spacecraft destroyed by a quantum anomaly. The surviving crew are thrown onto the same planet but in different eras. They must try to help one another while facing the threat of alien intelligence that wants to use human technology to manipulate the future. The story combines elements of hard science fiction, survival thriller, and time mystery that are characteristic of Weir.
In his official statement, Weir said he is obsessed with problems that demand mathematical and scientific solutions. He considers Exoplanet to offer a twist that kept him up all night: what if people trying to save one another are separated not by distance but by hundreds of years of time? "You can't watch that story. You have to listen to it," he said, emphasizing that the audio medium is an inseparable part of the experience.
Although he has never explored time travel in his work, Weir has in fact often raised the theme of space communication. In The Martian, astronaut Mark Watney must use the Pathfinder probe to contact NASA. Meanwhile in Project Hail Mary, the character Wyland Grace records a message for Earth and waits years to learn the outcome of his mission. Exoplanet appears set to reinforce Weir's interest in the challenge of communication across time and space.
"Andy Weir's stories turn rigorous science into thrilling adventures with heart-pounding action and deep human emotion. That is why his books have sold millions and inspired blockbuster films. With Andy as executive producer and Benjamin Percy writing a script made for listening, Exoplanet is designed for fans of Project Hail Mary and The Martian, while offering something entirely new," said Marshall Lewy, Head of Audible Content North America.
Weir's decision to move to the original audio format reflects an entertainment landscape that keeps changing. Audible, Amazon's audio platform, is increasingly aggressive in producing original content by involving prominent talent. The immersive audio format with Hollywood star voice actors such as Anthony Mackie, Ariana DeBose, and John Leguizamo is expected to draw a wider audience, including fans of film adaptations of Weir's earlier works.
For Indonesia, this phenomenon reflects an increasingly diverse trend in digital entertainment consumption. Audio services such as Audible are indeed not yet as popular as video streaming platforms, but the growth of podcasts and audiobooks in the country shows rising interest. The presence of works such as Exoplanet can be a catalyst for local creators to explore the audio drama format with comparable production, drawing on the wealth of stories and voice acting talent at home.
With the combination of Andy Weir's big name, a script by Benjamin Percy, and a lineup of top-tier voice actors, Exoplanet has the potential to be one of the most anticipated audio releases of the year. The question is whether the original audio format will be able to rival printed novels in terms of story depth and cultural impact. The answer will be revealed after the launch on November 5.
