Borussia Mönchengladbach had to settle for a share of the points with Paderborn after their Bundesliga matchweek 8 fixture ended goalless at Borussia Park on Saturday (19/10). The result felt like two points dropped for the hosts, especially since they created more chances and had a goal disallowed by the video assistant referee (VAR).
Gladbach coach Alexander Blessin made four changes from the DFB Cup win over Karlsruhe, bringing in Daiki Hashioka, Lukas Ullrich, Florian Neuhaus, and Wael Mohya. Meanwhile, Paderborn coach Ralf Kettemann overhauled six positions after his side were knocked out of the DFB Cup by VfB Stuttgart, handing starts to Nahuel Noll, Mattes Hansen, Raphael Obermair, Tjark Scheller, Stefano Marino, and Gabriel Vidović.
The first half was a cautious affair. Paderborn gradually found their rhythm and nearly took the lead through Tom Baack's low shot from a short-corner routine in the 27th minute, but Daniel Batz was able to parry the ball. Gladbach responded with a Robin Hack chip from 23 meters that drifted just wide to the right of Noll's goal. In the 36th minute, Joe Scally found the net with a header at the far post, but the referee disallowed it after a VAR review for a foul on Noll in the build-up.
Noll was a wall for Paderborn. He made two key saves, exceeding his expected saves of 0.8, and received 39 percent of the votes for player of the match. His outstanding performance denied clear chances for Scally and Chiarodia, ensuring the first half ended goalless.
In the second half, Gladbach raised the intensity. Gabriel Vidović forced Batz into a good save, while at the other end Hansen made a crucial block to deny Mohya after the latter beat three Paderborn players. Laurin Curda nearly scored with a long-range shot that went wide, and substitute Rayan Philippe almost snatched a winner in injury time, but his low shot drifted just off target. Nicolas Kühn also had a chance late on, but his effort was blocked and saved by the keeper. The score remained 0-0 until the final whistle.
“We are disappointed not to have taken our chances, but we have to acknowledge the outstanding performance of the opposition goalkeeper,” Blessin said in the post-match press conference. “We will keep working hard for a better result.”
With this result, Gladbach remain stuck in mid-table and failed to close in on the European places, while Paderborn earned a valuable away point that shows an improved performance after their DFB Cup defeat. The match also highlighted the importance of the goalkeeper's role in modern football, where crucial saves can decide the outcome.
For Indonesian football fans, this result can be a lesson in how crucial efficiency is in making the most of chances. The Indonesia national team often dominates possession but struggles to score, much like Gladbach did. Going forward, Gladbach face a congested schedule and need to rediscover their cutting edge up front to compete at the top. Paderborn, meanwhile, will look to maintain the impressive form of their young goalkeeper, Nahuel Noll, who has been in the spotlight. Will Gladbach bounce back in their next match, or will Paderborn keep climbing?
