Sunderland have once again been forced to confront a harsh reality in the Premier League. After an impressive season last year, they now sit at the bottom of the table and have failed to score in their last 346 minutes—more than three full matches without a goal. This scoring drought is a warning sign for manager Regis Le Bris, who is battling to lift the team's performance.
Nevertheless, Le Bris has continued to praise his squad's fighting spirit, which ended a run of four straight defeats and now leaves them just two points from safety. However, the main problem lies in their attacking sharpness. Last season, Sunderland were known as one of the teams least likely to create chances in the Premier League. This season, they actually rank eighth for big chances (22), showing improvement in creativity, but finishing remains a scourge.
In the match against Leeds, Brian Brobbey returned from injury but failed to score. Nilson Angulo stood out on the left wing with a determination that summer signing Malick Fofana has yet to show, with the latter instead warming the bench. According to reporter James Copley, Angulo's performance may be the best so far for Sunderland. Though still raw and at times frustrating, Angulo's talent for becoming a leading figure in attack is beyond doubt, especially if he can build a partnership with Brobbey.
The potential at the Stadium of Light is there, but Le Bris is struggling to realize it. Even last season, Sunderland's success was built on hard work and togetherness, not solely on the ability to create chances. Now, the emergence of young players such as Chris Rigg—who is approaching 100 appearances for the club and impressed in his second Premier League start of the season—as well as a maturing Angulo, has pushed Simon Adingra further to the margins.
Adingra, who joined from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2025, failed to find his best form under Le Bris. He struggled to adapt and asked to be loaned out midway through the season. He is now at Ajax with an option to buy that will most likely end his Sunderland future in 2027. Despite his talent, the Ivory Coast winger is regarded as an unprofitable signing. He scored just one goal in 14 Premier League matches before being loaned to Monaco, where he also showed little consistency.
"At Sunderland, the fans might say that Adingra was never interested in succeeding at this club. He never considered the Stadium of Light home," goes the view circulating among supporters.
The injury that has limited Adingra to just 30 minutes with Ajax this season has further muddied his situation. Although there is still time to revive his career, it is likely he will never wear the Sunderland shirt again. Le Bris and his team need players ready to sacrifice for the club crest, and Adingra does not appear to be that type.
Looking ahead, Sunderland face an urgent need to add firepower to their attack. The management is expected to invest significantly in 2027 to bring in one or two new strikers to boost their attacking threat. But with Adingra's form continuing to decline and the emergence of young talents such as Rigg and Angulo, will Sunderland be able to rise from their slump, or will they sink even deeper into the relegation zone?
