Manchester United Crisis: Carrick on the Brink, Nagelsmann and Howe Enter the Frame

Manchester United are once again in the eye of a crisis after a string of poor results left Michael Carrick's position increasingly insecure. The defeat to Bournemouth last weekend was the latest blow in a run of eight Premier League matches without a win, and several senior club figures are reportedly beginning to doubt the manager's future.

The situation contrasts with last season, when Carrick led United to a top-four finish and secured a Champions League ticket. Now, the Red Devils are languishing in 17th place with the sixth-worst defensive record in the league — conceding 13 goals in their first eight matches. The expected goals (xG) they have faced stands at 12.1, on par with promoted side Hull City. In attack, United are recorded as the team with the second-worst conversion rate even though their shots on target per 90 minutes rank in the league's top five.

Tension in the dressing room has also come under scrutiny. Captain Bruno Fernandes is reportedly unhappy with Carrick's tactics, particularly the decision not to press man-to-man in the defeat to Como. Fernandes was not even played at all against Bournemouth, and later liked an Instagram post containing the quote "Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care" — a signal of the fraying relationship between player and manager. Lisandro Martinez also voiced criticism of club officials after the defeat to Atlético Madrid.

Amid the uncertainty, United's management have begun mapping out replacement options. Eddie Howe is said to be the top priority of Director of Football Jason Wilcox. However, a talkSPORT report says Julian Nagelsmann — currently a free agent after leaving the Germany national team — is on the shortlist of strong candidates. Christopher Vivell is reported to be pushing for Nagelsmann's appointment, though he must convince Wilcox to shift focus away from Howe.

"Nagelsmann is one of the best coaches in Europe," said tactical analyst Statman Dave, describing the reputation of the 39-year-old coach.

For United, Nagelsmann offers a particular appeal. The 4-2-3-1 system he employed successfully led Bayern Munich to the 2021/22 Bundesliga title, with a central role for the attacking midfielder. In his final season at Bayern, Thomas Müller recorded 18 assists behind Robert Lewandowski — a pattern that could restore the sharpness of Bruno Fernandes, who last season broke the record for most assists in a single Premier League season with 21.

However, the final decision remains in the hands of the management. Carrick still has supporters internally, but continued poor results could force a change. If United choose Nagelsmann, they hope to end the slump and rebuild the foundation of play that has been lost. Conversely, keeping Carrick without significant improvement risks prolonging the instability, especially with the transfer window drawing closer.
