Mercedes left the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix with the technical conclusion they had been seeking: the new development package tested by Andrea Kimi Antonelli proved faster than the older specification used by George Russell. That certainty came after the Brackley-based team ran a split-garage strategy throughout the weekend at Marina Bay.
The split-specification approach is nothing new in the paddock, but it is rarely used on a track as complex as the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Mercedes deliberately placed Antonelli on the latest floor and wing elements, while Russell stayed on the previous aerodynamic configuration. The goal was singular: to get a direct comparison in real race conditions, not just simulation data from the factory.
Mercedes Trackside Technical Director Andrew Shovlin acknowledged that the main mission of the weekend was to deepen understanding of the update package. According to him, the team saw positive signals in both qualifying and the race once they managed to get close to the right operating window. He said the three days in Singapore provided valuable lessons for the engineering department.
Russell endured a tough race after a 60-position penalty forced him to start from the back. Nevertheless, he was able to bring the older-spec car into the points through a series of overtaking maneuvers. Meanwhile, Antonelli drove with discipline in managing tire degradation and maximized the potential of the new floor and wing to secure a podium.
"Kimi drove very maturely, managed the tires well, and had the pace to make the moves that secured the podium," said Shovlin. "George's race is always challenging from the back, but he fought hard and managed to get back into the points."
The result answers Mercedes' stalemate over the past few weeks. The team struggled to balance the car's characteristics at high and low speeds, leaving the development direction ambiguous. Now, the data from Singapore provides certainty that the technical path chosen by Antonelli is the right foundation for the rest of the season.
For Mercedes, the timing could not be more ideal. Antonelli has a mathematical chance to clinch the 2026 drivers' world title at the next round in the United States. If the upgrade package truly unlocks its potential in Austin, the pressure will shift to rivals who must close the gap in the remaining races.
Shovlin stressed there is still homework to do, especially in optimizing the car's operating window. However, he said the data collected will be very valuable for preparation heading to Austin. The performance direction is now clearer, and the team's focus is on unlocking more potential from the package in the final races.
The question is, can Mercedes turn its technical advantage in Singapore into consistency at fast circuits like the Circuit of the Americas? If so, Antonelli's dominance in the standings could turn into a title that is nearly unavoidable.
