Veteran actor Richard E. Grant has voiced his concerns ahead of the premiere of The Celebrity Traitors on BBC One, particularly about the physical challenges he will have to face alongside several other senior contestants, including supermodel Jerry Hall. In an interview with the BBC, the 69-year-old described himself and Hall, 70, as part of the 'older generation' among the contestants.
Grant hopes the production team will show special leniency toward older participants. He even joked about the possibility of having to perform extreme stunts such as bungee jumping off the castle wall that serves as the filming location. "There's no special preparation. Jerry Hall and I are the oldest in this group. So I really hope there's some leeway about whether we're asked to jump off the castle wall," he said.
Unlike Grant, Jerry Hall welcomed the challenge with enthusiasm. She said she remains active despite being the oldest contestant. "I'm the oldest person here, but I'm quite active. I don't sit around much. I have lots of animalsโtwo dogs, one cat, three horses, eight chickens. I garden, look after my grandchildren, and I'm very busy," she said. Hall is confident her physical condition will hold up even through various tough missions.
Despite appearing confident, Hall admitted her family had warned her. Her four children asked her to be careful and not push herself too hard. "My children said, 'Mum, don't do anything dangerous. Be careful!' They were worried. They said, 'Mum feels younger than her age. Mum and Dad always do things people do in their twenties, which might not be appropriate now,'" Hall recounted. She even asked Mick Jagger to stand by in case there were any problems with the children while she was filming.
Even so, Hall stressed that her family is very competitive when playing games together. She promised to behave sportingly on the show. Meanwhile, Grant admitted he has a competitive side, which he sees as a consequence of the acting profession. "Yes, you have to be competitive if you want to survive in this profession. It's too brutal if you're not," he said.
Besides Grant and Hall, The Celebrity Traitors will also feature a number of big names such as James Blunt, Martin Sheen, Ross Kemp, and Bella Ramsay. The show's format adapts the popular social game in which contestants must guess who among them is playing the role of the 'traitor'.
The phenomenon of senior celebrities taking part in physical reality shows highlights a shift in an entertainment industry that is becoming more inclusive of age. If middle-aged contestants were once associated with supporting roles, they are now the center of attention. The question is, will the leniency Grant hopes for actually be granted, or will it instead become a dramatic ingredient that boosts ratings? We'll find out in tonight's premiere.
