The classic adventure film The Mummy (1999) has suddenly shot into the ranks of the most popular films on Netflix this week, coinciding with the circulation of photos from the set of the long-awaited fourth sequel. According to FlixPatrol data, the 27-year-old film made it into the streaming platform's top 10 list, proving that Brendan Fraser's charm as Rick O'Connell has not faded.
This revival is not without reason. Filming for The Mummy 4 is underway with Fraser and Rachel Weisz reprising their iconic roles. Weisz last appeared as Evelyn Carnahan in The Mummy Returns (2001), making this reunion a historic moment after more than two decades. The new film is scheduled to hit theaters on 15 October 2027, and is expected to disregard the events of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), which did not feature Weisz.
For the entertainment industry, this phenomenon shows how old content can revive a franchise that had dimmed. Netflix, as the platform streaming the original film, benefits from the surge of viewers who are curious or seeking nostalgia. Meanwhile, the studio behind The Mummy 4 is using this moment to build market expectations ahead of the release two years from now. This pattern resembles the strategy often employed by Disney or Warner Bros., where a streaming re-release serves as a warm-up before a sequel arrives.
In Indonesia, enthusiasm for classic films is also high. The Mummy was once a must-watch on national television in the early 2000s, and now a new generation can watch it legally on Netflix. This revival could push local streaming platforms to be more aggressive in offering old catalog content, especially ahead of the sequel's release. In addition, the success of The Mummy 4 later could serve as an indicator for the Southeast Asian market, whether 90s nostalgia still sells amid the onslaught of new content.
"The renewed popularity of old films on streaming platforms is often a positive signal for their sequels," said an entertainment industry analyst who declined to be named. "It shows that the fan base is still solid and ready to welcome a new story."
With a release date still two years away, the question is whether this momentum can be sustained. Netflix and the studio certainly hope the enthusiasm will not wane, while viewers wait to see whether The Mummy 4 can reunite classic charm with the demands of the modern market. If it succeeds, it is not impossible that this franchise will once again become a star at the global box office, including in Indonesia.
