Halo Studios Overhauled, Halo's Future Now in Activision's Hands

Microsoft is reported to have slashed Halo Studios dramatically, leaving around 30 people, and handed the future of the Halo franchise to Activision. The move marks a major overhaul in the management of one of the most iconic game franchises, which for two decades has been synonymous with Xbox.
According to reports by The Verge journalist Tom Warren and YouTuber Rebs Gaming, the decision surprised many Halo Studios employees. They only learned of their employment status after the official announcement appeared on the Xbox blog, rather than through internal communication first. "The first communication came through the public Xbox blog, before notifications were sent to employees throughout the morning," Warren wrote, as quoted.
At the time of the layoffs, no Halo game was in full production. However, several projects were reported to be in development, including remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3, Halo 7, and several spin-off campaigns. One of the shorter spin-offs is planned to be adapted from the novel First Strike and will be released between the remakes.
Microsoft's decision raises questions about the direction of the company's strategy in the gaming industry. Halo has long been the backbone of the Xbox ecosystem, but the franchise's development has often been hampered by delays and less-than-smooth live-service experiments. Nevertheless, Halo Infinite is considered one of the best Halo games since the Bungie era, even surpassing some aspects of the original developer.
"The next main Halo game is at least 'years' away," Warren and Rebs said, describing how far the project is from completion.
For fans, the news has sparked disappointment. Many had hoped that the talent at Halo Studios could contribute to Halo 7, given Halo Infinite's achievements. However, with the shift to Activision, the creative direction of the franchise will be entirely in the hands of a new team. Activision, known for Call of Duty, is now responsible for building a dedicated studio to continue Halo.
From an industry perspective, Microsoft's move can be seen as an efficiency effort following major acquisitions. However, for the global gaming market, particularly in Southeast Asia and Indonesia, this change could affect the availability of Xbox content and services. Halo fans in Indonesia, who have long awaited a sequel, may have to wait even longer. In addition, if Activision develops Halo as a live-service game, aggressive monetization models could become a concern in their own right.
Going forward, the question is whether Activision can revive Halo's glory, or instead repeat the same pattern. Meanwhile, the fate of the remaining developers at Halo Studios is also uncertain, whether they will stay on or follow their colleagues who have left the project.
