Marvel is drawing audiences back to cinemas with a re-release of Avengers: Endgame titled Endgame Encore, which carries four minutes of additional material containing four new scenes. The footage is not merely a nostalgia bonus, but a narrative bridge to Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled to open on 18 December.
The move marks a new pattern in how Marvel manages its franchise. Instead of leaving audiences waiting without content between two big films, the studio chose to re-release an older film with added scenes shot alongside the production of Doomsday. Viewers who already saw Endgame in 2019 are pushed back into cinemas to understand story fragments that had been hidden until now.
The two most-discussed scenes involve characters previously thought to have completed their arcs. The first shows Steve Rogers enjoying his retirement with Peggy Carter, before the arrival of Loki in a Time Variance Authority uniform. Loki's presence hints that Steve will be pulled back into the multiverse conflict, reinforcing speculation that Thor will reunite with his brother in Doomsday.
The second scene shows Bruce Banner recording a vlog from an underground military complex, two miles below the Earth's surface. He is then confronted by Doctor Doom. The appearance connects to events in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, in which Banner surrenders to be detained after a Savage Hulk rampage triggered by Jean Grey.
Banner's encounter with Doom confirms that Marvel is redrawing the balance of power among its heroes before the great conflict erupts.
From an industry standpoint, this re-release strategy is not without calculation. Marvel faces pressure to stay relevant after the post-Endgame phase was seen as losing direction. By inserting scenes that can only be understood if viewers watch Endgame Encore, the studio creates urgency to see it in cinemas, while also tapping the long-time fan base that wants to follow the story's continuity.
For Indonesian audiences, the phenomenon has a direct impact on entertainment schedules and spending. Major cinemas in Jakarta, Surabaya, and other cities will screen Endgame Encore again, opening the door to additional revenue amid competition with streaming platforms. Viewers who want to follow the Doomsday storyline in full should consider watching this encore version, because those scenes are not guaranteed to be available on streaming services any time soon.
The remaining question is how far Marvel will rely on a similar strategy for its next franchises. If Endgame Encore succeeds commercially, it is not impossible that other studios will follow the pattern of re-releasing films with exclusive added scenes, ultimately changing how audiences consume franchise films in cinemas.
