Star Wars Returns to the Big Screen: The 2027 Release Map and the Franchise's Future

After years of relying on television series, the Star Wars franchise is preparing to return to cinemas in 2027. Lucasfilm and Disney confirmed that two feature films will be released that year: The Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy. The move marks a new chapter for a franchise that since 2019 has been more present on streaming platforms.

The decision to return to theaters is not without reason. Since The Rise of Skywalker (2019) and Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) received mixed responses, Lucasfilm chose to focus on series such as The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka. However, pressure to deliver a grand cinematic experience has resurfaced, especially after the commercial success of major post-pandemic films. The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled to open on 28 May 2027, while Starfighter follows on 19 February 2027.

Beyond those two films, Lucasfilm is also preparing a re-release of Star Wars: A New Hope in its original format without digital changes. This version will screen in theaters for a limited period, including in IMAX 70mm format. For devoted fans, this is a rare chance to watch the 1977 classic as it was first released.

On the television side, the second season of Ahsoka will continue the story after season one with two storylines: Ahsoka and Sabine's hunt on Peridea, and Admiral Thrawn's attack on the New Republic. Rory McCann replaces the late Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll. The season will also introduce elements of the Mortis Gods, which are considered narratively challenging.

The animated series Maul: Shadow Lord will also return with a second season in 2027, continuing the story of Darth Maul after a successful first season. Meanwhile, Star Wars: Visions will present The Ninth Jedi as part of its 2026 lineup.

"From the day Kathy Kennedy called me, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, the experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally," said Shawn Levy, director of Starfighter.

However, not all projects have gone smoothly. Some previously announced films have an unclear fate. Rian Johnson's trilogy and Kevin Feige's project were reported to be canceled. The Lando film, originally a Disney+ series, was changed into a film, with Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Glover taking over the script. The Rey film project directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy also remains a question mark after Kathleen Kennedy no longer serves as president of Lucasfilm.

On the other hand, Dave Filoni, who is now co-president of Lucasfilm, is working on a film focused on the New Republic era. This film will close out the stories from The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka. Meanwhile, James Mangold is developing a film set 25,000 years before the original trilogy, highlighting the origins of the Jedi and the Force. Taika Waititi is also still involved in a project whose details have not been announced, though its status was described as "still alive" by Kennedy.

For the Indonesian market, Star Wars' return to cinemas could potentially revive audience interest in the franchise. Although the Star Wars fan base in Indonesia is not as large as in the American or European markets, the arrival of these films could boost ticket and merchandise sales, especially if supported by an aggressive marketing campaign. In addition, releases on Disney+ for series such as Ahsoka and Maul: Shadow Lord will remain a draw for streaming service subscribers in the country.

Looking ahead, the question is whether Star Wars can recapture global enthusiasm like the 2015-2019 era, or whether it will get stuck in a cycle of projects that never reach completion. With a packed release schedule in 2027, Lucasfilm appears to be betting that nostalgia and innovation can go hand in hand.
