Veteran actor John Malkovich has added another achievement to his film career. After winning the Volpi Cup for best actor at the 83rd Venice Film Festival, the 72-year-old is scheduled to receive the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award at the 42nd Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF), to be held February 3โ13, 2027. The award recognizes his striking performance in the film Wild Horse Nine, directed by Martin McDonagh.
Roger Durling, executive director of SBIFF, praised Malkovich's ability to blend complex emotions into a single role. "A legendary actor gives the performance of his career to date, combining pathos, volatility, vulnerability, and tenderness. It is an acrobatic act that shows just how great he is as an artist," Durling said. The award adds to a long list of recognition for Malkovich's career, which has spanned more than four decades.
Wild Horse Nine itself has drawn attention at various prestigious festivals. The film has screened in Venice, Telluride, and Toronto, with its Venice premiere receiving a long standing ovation. Malkovich appeared emotional as the audience gave enthusiastic applause. The film is set just before the 1973 Chilean coup and follows two CIA agents, Chris and Lee, who are sent from Santiago to Easter Island by their station chief. Malkovich stars alongside Sam Rockwell, with support from actors such as Steve Buscemi, Mariana Di Girolamo, Ailรญn Salas, Tom Waits, and Parker Posey.
Throughout his career, Malkovich has received two Academy Award nominations: as a supporting actor for Places in the Heart and for his role as assassin Mitch Leary in In the Line of Fire. He also won an Emmy for the television adaptation of Death of a Salesman. His name became closely tied to Spike Jonze's Being John Malkovich (1999), in which he played a fictional version of himself. The surreal comedy became one of the iconic works associated with him. Other credits include Dangerous Liaisons, Empire of the Sun, Con Air, Burn After Reading, Of Mice and Men, and the Red trilogy. On television, he recently appeared in the Apple TV+ series Bad Monkey and is working on the Amazon Prime thriller Bishop.
"It is an acrobatic act that shows just how great he is as an artist," said Roger Durling, executive director of SBIFF.
For the Indonesian film industry, Malkovich's achievement can serve as a mirror of how senior actors remain relevant and valued on the global stage. Amid the dominance of young stars, awards like this affirm that depth of acting and long experience still hold a special place. Moreover, films that touch on historical and political themes, such as Wild Horse Nine, often draw attention at international festivals, opening opportunities for Indonesian filmmakers to explore similar narratives with a local perspective.
With Wild Horse Nine set to open on November 6, public attention on Malkovich is expected to keep rising. Will this SBIFF award become a stepping stone to the Oscars? Given the festival's track record as a frequent indicator on the road to the Academy Awards, Malkovich's chances of returning to the Oscar radar are increasingly open. We will just have to wait for the next move from an actor who never loses his charm on the big screen.
